文字（モンジ）アリ上ノ方ニ大字（タイジ）￣ニ東トイフ字ヲ彫付（ホルツケ）タリト云
其 文（ブン）ハイカナル事ナラン土 民（ミン）尊敬（ソンキヤウ）シテ石摺（イシズル）ナドニ
スル事ヲユルサズ故（ユヱ）ニシル人ナシ近年 好事（コウジ）ノ士（シ）此 碑（ヒ）
ヲ摺（ス）リ伝（ツタ）ヘンコトヲ求（モトム）レドモ極（ゴク）遠方ノ事故遊フ人
モ稀（マレ）ニテイマダ世ニ弘（ヒロ）マラズ余モ彼地（カノチ）ヲ往来（ワウライ）セシカ
ドモ其比其 辺（ヘン）盗賊（トウゾク）ノ【挿入「沙（サ）」】汰（タ）頻（シキリ）ナリシカバ取急（トリイソク）ギテ打（ウチ）

現代語訳
文字があり、上の方に大字で「東」という字を彫り付けてあるという。その文はいかなることであろうか。土民が尊敬していて石摺などにすることを許さないため、知る人がない。近年、好事の士がこの碑を摺って伝えんことを求めるけれども、極めて遠方のことゆえ遊ぶ人も稀で、いまだ世に広まらない。私もかの地を往来したけれども、その頃その辺りは盗賊の騒ぎが頻繁であったので、取り急いで通り過ぎたため、その村へも至らず、今に残念である。多賀城の碑に「西」という大字があれば、これに対する東の碑があるべきことである。
また『扶木集』清輔朝臣の歌に「石文やつかろのをちに」

There are characters, and at the top, the large character "East" is said to be carved. What might the content of that inscription be? Since the local people revere it and do not permit making stone rubbings of it, no one knows its content. In recent years, scholars with antiquarian interests have sought to make rubbings of this monument and transmit its contents, but since it is in an extremely remote location and few people travel there for pleasure, it has not yet become widely known in the world. I too have traveled through that region, but at that time bandit disturbances were frequent in that area, so I hurried through and did not reach that village, which I regret to this day. If the Taga Castle monument has the large character "West," there should logically be an eastern monument to correspond with it.
Also, in the Fubokushū, there is a poem by Kiyosuke Ason that begins "Ishibumi ya Tsukaro no ochi ni" (Stone monument at Tsukaro's settlement...)
