語も改めて語る所は先祖より日本人のごとく言いなして居ることと思われる故に、礼義文華のいまだ開けざるは尤もの事なり。南部の辺鄙にはいろはをだに知らずして盲暦というものありとぞ。余が通行を、街道にはあらねども聞し儘を記す。また般若心経なども盲暦の法にて誦すると云う。その図左のごとし。
右のごとしなり。然れども彼地の方言あるゆえ絵にては甚だ合点し難き事多し。注解あり。
英語訳
...and reformed their language, so that places that now speak have been saying they are Japanese since their ancestors' time, or so it seems. Therefore, it is quite natural that ritual propriety and refined culture have not yet developed. In the remote regions of Nanbu, there are those who do not even know the iroha syllabary and practice something called "blind calendar reading." I record what I heard during my travels, though not on the main highways. They also say that texts like the Heart Sutra are recited using the blind calendar method. The diagram is as follows on the left.
