The right side shows the main text of the Heart Sutra. It should be read by matching them up. Using these methods, the places that do not yet know hiragana letters are remote mountainous areas like Tayama village, which is located seventy to eighty ri northwest of Morioka castle town in Nanbu domain. This can truly be called equivalent to the ancient practice of knotted cord records. Even now in Ezo territory, there are no written characters, and they make notches in wood as memory aids, so it is said. Considering these matters, the difference in literary culture between the western and eastern provinces is quite extreme. In the mountains of Kyushu, where iroha kana are not yet known, people still practice calligraphy with the two poems "Naniwa-zu" and "Asaka-yama." One should reflect on how ancient customs have not been lost.
