歩み行くに、村上より一里、猿沢の駅の辺り、既に雪多し。それより又一里、塩の町という駅にて中食するに、その家の老婆言うには「これより先は雪甚だ深くして、さようでなくては行き難し。今宜はこの所に宿し給え」と言う。養軒と顔を見合わせ「まだ日中にも至らざるに宿を取れと言う老婆の、この家に留めんと思いて言うなるべし。殊に天気も晴れたり。この先の葡萄の駅までは僅かに二里の道なれば、八つ過ぐる頃までには行き着くべし」と嘲笑いて出でたるに、誠に老婆が言える如く

Walking on, one ri from Murakami, around Sarusawa station, there was already much snow. From there, another ri further, at a station called Shio-no-machi, we stopped for a midday meal. The old woman of that house said, "From here on, the snow is extremely deep, and it will be difficult to proceed unless conditions are just right. Please stay the night here." Yōken and I exchanged glances, thinking, "Though it's not even midday yet, this old woman tells us to take lodging—she must be saying this because she wants to keep us at her house. Moreover, the weather has cleared. To Budō station ahead is merely a two-ri journey, so we should be able to reach it by around two o'clock."
