塩の町を出離れてより、雪殊に深く、山川道路ただ一面の白雪にて、村を離れて半道ばかりは人の行き通いし跡にてありて目印もありしが、それより先きは道筋も分からず、方角をも取り失いて行くべき先を弁えかねつつ迷い行くに、折々は雪を踏み抜いて川の中へ落ち入り、腰ばかりも雪の中にあり。或いは切り岸などの所に行きかかり、雪崩れ落ちて深き所へ転げ込むなどして、養軒と共に助け合いつつ、谷筋の平らかなる所を道なるべしと志して行くほどに、谷川、池沢、深田などの中々

After leaving Shio-no-machi, the snow became particularly deep, and the mountains, rivers, and roads were covered with a uniform blanket of white snow. For about half a ri from the village, there were traces of people having passed through and landmarks were visible, but beyond that point, we could not discern the path, lost our bearings, and unable to determine which way to proceed, we wandered lost. Occasionally we would break through the snow and fall into streams, finding ourselves waist-deep in snow. Sometimes we would approach steep embankments and, with snow collapsing beneath us, tumble into deep places. Yōken and I helped each other as we proceeded, believing that the level areas along the valley floors must be the path, but among the valley streams, ponds, marshes, and deep rice fields...
