思えば今日、度々踏み抜き落ち入った時に傷ついたのだが、寒さのために血も凍って流れず、痛みも覚えなかった。しかし今、湯に入り火にあたって温めて初めて血が流れ出したのである。その傷の跡は今も黒く残っている。さて、この夜つくづく思うに、今日の所でさえこのような有様である。明日の道は更に厳しく、大ブドウ峠にて北地第一の雪所であれば、いかなる難儀に及ぶだろうか。ただ早朝、雪が凍って堅い間に案内者を雇うべしと用意して、十九日まだ明け切らないうちに立ち出で、案内を先に立てて

Thinking back, when I repeatedly broke through the snow and fell in today, I must have been injured, but because of the cold, even my blood froze and did not flow, and I felt no pain. However, now that I have bathed and warmed myself by the fire, blood began to flow for the first time. The scars from those wounds remain black to this day. Now, reflecting deeply on this night, if today's journey was already like this, what greater hardships await tomorrow? The path ahead is even more severe—the Great Budō Pass, the foremost snowy region in the north. What difficulties might we encounter? I resolved that we must hire a guide early in the morning while the snow is frozen hard. On the 19th, before dawn had fully broken, we set out with our guide leading the way.
