現代語訳
ない。命を保てたのは、これぞ天の助けとも言うべきであろう。そもそも雪国には「なだれ」ということがあり、また「あわ」ということがあって、年々人が遭難することである。「あわ」というのは冬に多く、「なだれ」は三、四月の頃にある。「あわ」というのは雪が最も盛んに降る時分に、山上の木の梢より雪の泡が一つ落ちる時、その泡が段々と転がり落ちるに従って、雪をかき集めるように次第に大きくなり、麓に至る頃には大山のようになって落下する。これに当たるものは大木も根こぎになり、折悪しく通りかかる時には、人馬ともによけ去るに暇がない。

Our lives were preserved - this could truly be called divine assistance. In general, in snow country there is something called "nadare" (avalanche), and also something called "awa" (snow foam), which cause people to perish every year. "Awa" occurs frequently in winter, while "nadare" happens around the third and fourth months. "Awa" refers to when snow is falling most heavily - when a single bubble of snow falls from the treetops on the mountaintop, as that foam gradually rolls down, it gathers snow like scooping it up, progressively growing larger, and by the time it reaches the foot of the mountain, it becomes like a great mountain and crashes down. When this strikes, even large trees are uprooted, and if one has the misfortune to be passing by at such a time, neither people nor horses have time to escape.
