The clothing of the official-like persons consisted of woolen tube-sleeved garments with gold thread embroidery on the sleeves, and the women wore silk clothing that appeared very elegant (marginal note: As stated in the main text, the women's clothing and tailoring were the same as mentioned before). The captain spoke with these official-like persons about various matters, then accompanied us both further through the town streets for about 12 cho more to a wholesale merchant-like house with a frontage of 6 ken and depth of 4 ken. We were taken to a 4-tatami-sized earthen floor area with a wooden platform, where we rested. Observing the interior, there were woolen fabrics, printed cottons and other textile goods as well as boxes stacked up, and about six people of various ranks seemed to live there. Of these, three appeared to be of higher status, with clothing and tailoring similar to what was described before - tube sleeves with gold thread embroidery - while three servant-like persons were
