【Right Page】 With this understanding, only the two of us transferred to the aforementioned ship and immediately set sail. One: From the beach where we first landed from the foreign ship to this place, I was told that everything was within California in America. One: Boarding that ship, we sailed southward for about five days and nights, arriving in late November at a bay with about 500 houses. From this bay entrance (marginal note: about 18-19 cho wide and 3 cho long), we landed by small boat together with the captain and walked through the town streets for about 14-15 cho (marginal note: I was told this place was called Massachusetts within America). We came to an official residence-like building with double doors and gate structure, about 8 ken wide frontage, with a tiled roof (marginal note: All buildings in this place had tiled roofs, and the general appearance was similar to Japanese style). This house appeared to have two rooms of about 10 and 8 tatami mats respectively, both with wooden floors covered with thin mats, where official-like 【Left Page】 persons as well as wife-like women were present. The clothing of the official-like persons consisted of woolen tube-sleeved garments with gold thread embroidery on the sleeves, and the women wore silk clothing that appeared very elegant (marginal note: As stated in the main text, the women's clothing and tailoring were the same as mentioned before). The captain spoke with these official-like persons about various matters, then accompanied us both further through the town streets for about 12 cho more to a wholesale merchant-like house with a frontage of 6 ken and depth of 4 ken. We were taken to a 4-tatami-sized earthen floor area with a wooden platform, where we rested. Observing the interior, there were woolen fabrics, printed cottons and other textile goods as well as boxes stacked up, and about six people of various ranks seemed to live there. Of these, three appeared to be of higher status, with clothing and tailoring similar to what was described before - tube sleeves with gold thread embroidery - while three servant-like persons were
