現代語訳
すでに化け尽くしていれば、もはや不思議なこともあろうかと、一間の内に入ってみれば、はるか上座なる上人らしき化け物が「今晩の法供養はいかがでありましたぞ」と言った。はるか末座にあった小姓は取り合えず
「♪今夜の月は空にこそ住め」
と詠んだ。

「ははあ、この寺の住僧が煩悩に暗まされた姿も目前に見えるぞ」と旅僧は取り合えず
「♪影映る水は氷に閉じられて」

このように詠んだところ、化け物どもは、この上の句の悟りの歌に紫雲の浮雲が晴れ、やがて成仏して、はっと姿も消え失せた。
「♪まことに煩悩の火も消え失せて、山々の鐘がごうごうと、物静かになった」
英語訳
Since they had all completely transformed, thinking there might be more wonders to see, he entered the room. There, a monster resembling a high priest in the place of honor asked, "How was tonight's Buddhist service?" A page sitting far at the lowest seat promptly responded:
"♪Tonight's moon dwells in the sky"

"Ah, I can see before my eyes the form of this temple's head priest, deluded by worldly desires," said the traveling monk, promptly adding:
"♪The water reflecting shadows is sealed in ice"

When he composed this verse, the monsters, upon hearing this enlightened poem with its upper verse, saw the floating clouds of purple mist clear away, and they achieved Buddhahood, suddenly vanishing completely.
"♪Truly the fires of earthly desires have been extinguished, and with the temple bells ringing throughout the mountains, all has become peaceful and quiet"
