た無御座候き今とても御名の字を犯すましき制
は於江戸は有之候然るを近き頃京都にては御
名の文字闕盡に認候事に成申候いつの御時より
にやと藤叔蔵へ聞合せ候へともしかと返事も
不申越候推量いたし候所是は予楽院殿なと仰出さ
れし事にも候歟かの准后は六典好ませ給ひし故
為字不成の制始りしにやと思ひやられ候古き唐の
制にならはせ給ひ律令の制有之候へ共かゝることに
なつませ給はすして皇国は皇国の風に字訓の

たのはありません。今でも御名の字を犯してはならないという制度は江戸にはございます。しかるに近頃京都では御名の文字を欠字にして認めることになっています。いつの御時代からなのかと藤叔蔵へ聞き合わせましたが、はっきりとした返事もありませんでした。推量いたしますところ、これは霊元院殿などが仰せ出されたことでもありましょうか。かの准后は六典をお好みになられた故、為字不成の制が始まったのかと思われます。古い唐の制にならわせ給い、律令の制がございますが、かかることになじませ給わずして、皇国は皇国の風に字訓の方で避けられています【以下綴じ目で読めず】

there is no such thing. Even now, there is a system in Edo that prohibits violating the characters of the Imperial name. However, recently in Kyoto it has become the practice to write the characters of the Imperial name with missing strokes. When I inquired of Tōshukura as to from which Imperial era this began, he did not give a clear reply. From my speculation, this may have been something proclaimed by Emperor Reigen or others. Since that quasi-empress favored the Six Codes, perhaps the system of character avoidance began then. Following the ancient Chinese system, there are ritsuryō regulations, but rather than becoming accustomed to such things, in our Imperial country we avoid them in our Imperial country's manner through character readings [remainder illegible due to binding].
I humbly believe this to be so. Though this is pointless lengthy discourse, I have mentioned it in the course of our discussion. I look forward to meeting you in person to discuss the myriad matters on my mind. With respectful bows.
