In Luoyang there lived a certain man. In his house he
stored ten thousand volumes of books, and in his person he had
mastered the principles of the Three Teachings. Meeting with
literary men from various provinces, he recorded in writing all manner of
strange tales. Though this was enjoyable, he still
lamented not knowing the true teachings of foreign lands, and
made a vow of prayer to the sacred image of Rokkaku-dō, saying "Please show me
the customs and lands of foreign countries," and secluded himself in prayer for seventeen days.
At dawn on the day his vow was fulfilled, a boy appeared and said "Excellent! Excellent!"
