there is no one who can clearly distinguish between right and wrong. Therefore, if there should be errors in future ages, it would not be proper for Your Lordship's name to be mentioned in such a context. Although I thought this, since Your Lordship was so determined to allow the propagation of this religion, and since it is particularly difficult to distinguish between right and wrong, we all kept silent and did not speak up. The matter of stopping this new religion at this time has been delayed. The reason is that there are many followers in nearby and distant provinces who would sacrifice their lives for their faith, and especially many distinguished persons of unwavering devotion such as the great lords, high-ranking families, and bannermen like Otomo Sorin and Takayama Ukon. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to hastily decree the cessation of the new religion, and unpredictable internal disturbances would be difficult to calculate. At this time, it would be better to refrain from discussing this matter in loud voices." When he said this, Iga Ise-no-kami, who was nearby, said: "What Gen'i says is most reasonable. If we were to destroy it without cause at this time, the extent of the resulting disturbances would be incalculable. Command the various sects to hold a religious debate with the new religion. If the Buddhist monks can win, then since the new religion would be proven orthodox, we should observe its progress a little longer. If the new religion loses, then since it would clearly be a false teaching, there would certainly be no one who would disobey even if cessation were decreed." Nobunaga agreed with this proposal and commanded both the monks of the various sects and the Nanban temple, setting a date for the religious debate. Saying this was an important religious debate, from the Buddhist side, Priest In of Nanzen-ji, Priest Rido of Jōka-in, Master Shinkai of Eikan-do, and other scholars from various sects arrived and took lodging in Azuchi. The debater from the Nanban temple representing the new religion was
