見迚本国ヨリ渡来スル所ノ碩学普留考務ト云 学匠其外破天連イルマン安土ニ到ル此普留考 務ハ始テ長崎ヘ渡来シテ一年ニ一切経ヲ三遍 熟読シテ仏法ニ通シ諸宗ノ大概ヲ諳ス其全体 頭髪鼠色ニシテ頭上ニ盞ヲ伏セタル如キ月代 アリ眼ハ丸クシテ目鏡ヲ掛タル如ク内ニ黄金 ノ色アリ鼻ハ栄螺貝ノイホヲスツテ付タル如 ク面ハ馬ニヒトシク口広クシテ五寸計歯ハ馬 ノ歯ノ如シ馬上ニ在テ鞍ノ上ニ立テ行已カ爪 ヨリ火ヲ出シテ多葉粉ヲ吸ヒ或ハ樹ノ上ニ烏 坏スハリタルヲ見テ馬ヲス〱ムルニ其烏動カ ス遂ニ其枝ヲ手折テ持ニ烏不動シテ造付クル カ如シ其外種々ノ幻術ヲ作シ奇妙ノ目ヲ驚サ シム双方安土ニ到テ期日ヲ定メ其時刻ニ及テ 諸宗ノ僧侶列坐スレハ普留考務ヲ論師トシテ 南蛮寺ノ学徒出席ス時ニ普留考務蜀紅錦ノ衣 ヲ著シテ二尺計ノ剣ヲ帯シテ向ヒ進ム僧家ヨ リ南禅寺ノ印長老対之時ニ普留考務曰如何ナ ルカ仏法印長老答曰即心即仏普留考務又曰如 何ナルカ即心即仏ノ奥意長老又答曰即心即仏

現代語訳

見たところ本国より渡来した碩学で普留考務という学匠、その外破天連(パードレ)、イルマンが安土に到着した。この普留考務は初めて長崎へ渡来してから一年で一切経を三回熟読して仏法に通じ、諸宗の大概を暗記している。その全体の容貌は、頭髪は鼠色で頭上に盞を伏せたような月代がある。眼は丸くて眼鏡をかけたようで、内に黄金の色がある。鼻は栄螺貝の殻を捨てて付けたようで、面は馬に等しく、口は広くて五寸ほど、歯は馬の歯のようである。馬上にあって鞍の上に立って行き、己が爪より火を出して煙草を吸い、或いは樹の上に烏が止まっているのを見て馬を進めるに、その烏は動かず、遂にその枝を手折って持つに、烏は動かずに作り付けのようである。その外種々の幻術を行い、奇妙な目を驚かせる。双方が安土に到着して期日を定め、その時刻に及んで諸宗の僧侶が列座すれば、普留考務を論師として南蛮寺の学徒が出席する。その時普留考務は蜀紅錦の衣を着して二尺ほどの剣を帯びて向かい進む。僧家より南禅寺の印長老がこれに対する。その時普留考務が言うには「いかなるか仏法」。印長老が答えて言うには「即心即仏」。普留考務がまた言うには「いかなるか即心即仏の奥意」。長老がまた答えて言うには「即心即仏

As could be seen, a learned scholar named Furukomu (Fructuoso) who had come from his home country, along with other Padres and Irmãos, arrived in Azuchi. This Furukomu, having first arrived in Nagasaki, had within one year read through all the Buddhist scriptures three times and mastered Buddhist teaching, memorizing the essentials of all the various sects. His overall appearance was as follows: his hair was mouse-colored with a tonsure on top of his head like an inverted bowl. His eyes were round as if wearing spectacles, with a golden color within. His nose was like a turban shell with its spiral removed and attached, his face was like that of a horse, his mouth was wide about five inches across, and his teeth were like horse's teeth. While on horseback, he would stand on his saddle as he rode, produce fire from his fingernails to smoke tobacco, and when he saw crows perched on tree branches, he would advance his horse toward them, but the crows would not move. When he finally broke off a branch to take it, the crows remained motionless as if they were artificial fixtures. Besides this, he performed various magical arts that amazed onlookers with their strangeness. Both sides having arrived in Azuchi, they set a date, and when the appointed time came and the monks of the various sects were seated in rows, the scholars of the Nanban temple took their seats with Furukomu as their debate leader. At that time, Furukomu wore robes of Shu red brocade and girded himself with a sword about two feet long as he advanced forward. From the Buddhist side, Priest In of Nanzen-ji faced him. At that time Furukomu said, "What is the Buddha-dharma?" Priest In answered, "Mind itself is Buddha." Furukomu again said, "What is the profound meaning of 'Mind itself is Buddha'?"
