上ノ草木ノ葉モキラメキ凄冷（モノスサマシキ）頃槙込ノ木ノ間
ヨリ怪シキ物現ハレ出タリ白衣ノ女髪ヲ乱シ
カケ苦シゲナル俤ニテ庭上ニ彳ミタリ簾中外
様トモニ是ハ不可然御物好ミ御慰ニ成ヘカラス
ト見ル中ニ歩行ミ寄御椽側ニ近付ヲ能々御覧
アレハ秀吉公未タ木下藤吉ト云節ノ妾女菊ト
云女秀吉公御出世ノ後来テ宮仕ヲ願フト雖トモ
往昔被召仕時雑言ヲ云テ去リシヿ有ヲ以テ不
召仕菊女之ヲ聞大キニ憤テ怨言ヲ吐ケル故秀
吉公御手討ニシ玉ヒシ女ナリ両人ノ者此事ヲ
知ルヘキヿナシ如何ナル因縁アツテ此女ヲ出

そして宣われたのは「我はまだ幽霊というものを見たことがない。これも出してみよ」と尋問された。黄昏に及んで御庭に現してみせようと言って退出した。そうしてその時刻に至って両人を召し出した。
両術師は傍の人に申して座中の燭の火を消させて障子を開き、庭上に九月十七日の月が幽かに照っていた時、風がざわめき雨が一通り降り過ぎて、庭上の草木の葉もきらめき、凄冷（ものすさまじき）頃、槙込みの木の間より怪しきものが現れ出た。白衣の女で髪を乱しかけ、苦しげな面影で庭上にたたずんでいた。
簾中の内外様ともに「これは不可然（よろしからぬ）御物好み、御慰みにはならない」と見ている中に、歩み寄って御縁側に近づくのをよくよく御覧になると、秀吉公がまだ木下藤吉と言っていた節の妾女で菊という女であった。秀吉公の御出世の後に来て宮仕えを願ったけれども、往昔お召し仕えしていた時に雑言を言って去ったことがあったので召し仕えず、菊女はこれを聞いて大いに憤って怨言を吐いたため、秀吉公が御手討ちにされた女であった。
両人の者がこの事を知るはずがない。いかなる因縁があってこの女を出したのか。ああ薄情だと思わない者はなし。果たして秀吉公は顔色不快になって術師を退出させた。秀吉公が宣うには「この者どもの術は奇怪千万である。これは必ず南蛮寺の残党どもであろう

The two magicians asked those nearby to extinguish the candle flames in the room and opened the sliding doors. In the garden, the moon of the 17th day of the 9th month was shining dimly when the wind rustled, rain fell briefly and passed, and the leaves of the plants and trees in the garden glittered. In this eerie and chilling atmosphere, a strange being appeared from among the closely planted trees. It was a woman in white robes with disheveled hair and a suffering countenance, standing motionless in the garden.
Both those inside behind the screens and those outside thought "This is improper entertainment, it cannot serve as amusement," but as she walked closer and approached the veranda, when they looked carefully, it was a woman named Kiku who had been Lord Hideyoshi's concubine when he was still called Kinoshita Tōkichi. After Lord Hideyoshi's rise to power, she had come seeking to serve in his household, but because she had once spoken ill of him and left during her previous service, she was not employed. When the woman Kiku heard this, she became greatly enraged and uttered resentful words, so Lord Hideyoshi had her executed by his own hand.
There was no way these two men could have known of this matter. What manner of karmic connection could have led them to conjure this woman? There was no one who did not think "How heartless!" Indeed, Lord Hideyoshi's complexion became displeased and he had the magicians dismissed. Lord Hideyoshi declared: "These men's arts are exceedingly strange and suspicious. They must surely be remnants of the Nanban-ji temple
