Item: Correspondence from Maeno Sanzaemon, retainer of Hakodate Magistrate Hori Oribe-no-sho, to Omura Zensuke and others, attendants of Lord Okada Hyobu.
Previous text omitted. On the morning of the 15th day of the 3rd month, an American ship entered port and departed on the 18th. On the 20th, one American whaling ship entered port and departed on the 25th. Subsequently, on the 5th day of the 4th month at the 9th hour, one American whaling ship entered port, and on the same day at the 7th hour, one North American whaling ship entered port. All had three masts. The ship that entered later was a steamship. One Japanese official boarded this ship and came aboard. On the 6th day at the 5th hour, there was a formal reception. It appears that more ships are arriving, according to what this person reported.
