ハ日本箱館へ参り地所を借在住可致旨被
申付参り候趣此方ニ而ハ其儀は相成不申
旨申聞候へ共承知無之又七日ニも応接有
之然ル處此儀江戸へ伺ニ相成候ニ付不申

は日本箱館へ参り地所を借り在住致すべき旨申し付けられ参り候趣、此方にてはその儀は相成らぬ旨申し聞かせ候えども承知せず。また七日にも応接これ有り。然るところ、この儀江戸へ伺いに相成り候につき申し聞かせず候にて、至急申すべき旨に定まり、八日より上陸致し罷り在り候次第に御座候。然るところ八日より右在住の所へアメリカの船市を立て申し候にては、役人中へ相談とは存じ候えども、私などの愚意には如何なものと存じ候。いずれともオロシア又はイギリス等よりも乗り込み候にて見え候節は、最早アメリカ先へ参り日本国へ本国の市を建て候間、此方より願い出申すべき向きも心得申すべきに致し候。

[The Americans] came saying they had been ordered to come to Hakodate, Japan, to rent land and reside there. We told them that such a matter could not be agreed to, but they would not accept this. There was another meeting on the 7th as well. However, since this matter had to be referred to Edo, we did not inform them and it was decided that we must report urgently. From the 8th day, they came ashore and remained there. From the 8th, the Americans established a market at their place of residence. While I believe this should be discussed among the officials, in my humble opinion, I wonder how this should be handled. In any case, when Russians or British also come aboard and appear, since the Americans have already come first and established their home country's market in Japan, we should also understand the direction in which we should make requests from our side.
