This temple was originally called Shōgaku-in and was located in Nanatsu-ji village, Nakashima district, founded by Gyōki Bosatsu in Tenpyō 7. In the first year of Ten'ō during Emperor Kōnin's reign, Kii no Korehiro (a person from Honda in Kawachi Province), who served as Kawachi no gon-no-kami, became Akita-jō-no-suke and was stationed in his assigned province. When his young child Mitsumaro, left behind in his hometown, reached seven years of age, the child longed for his father Korehiro and set out alone to travel down to the assigned province of Dewa. However, upon reaching Kayazu village in this province, he became seriously ill and died. At that time, father Korehiro had finished his term of office and returned home. When he lodged at Kayazu and encountered the death of his child, in his overwhelming grief he came to Shōgaku-in and met the resident monk Chikō, pleading for him to pray for the temporary revival of his young child. Chikō took pity on him and [went to] the forest grove east of the temple...
