に壇（だん）を封（ほう）じ地を清（きよ）め薬師如来を壇上に安して却死（きやくし）
返魂香（はんごんかう）といへる名香をたき医王密法（いわうみつほう）を修（しゆ）せしかば香煙（かうえん）
児が面に掩（おほ）ひ忽 蘇生（そせい）し父子名乗る事を得たりさて
かたみに愛慕（あいぼ）の情を語（かた）らひしばらくありて全く死せし
かばなく〳〵正覚院に葬（ほうふ）り追福の為に延暦六年十二月

壇を築いて地を清め、薬師如来を壇上に安置して、却死返魂香という名香を焚き、医王密法を修したところ、香煙が児の顔を覆い、たちまち蘇生して父子が名乗り合うことができた。そうして互いに愛慕の情を語り合ってしばらくの間があって、完全に死んでしまった。やむなく正覚院に葬り、追福のために延暦六年十二月に七区の仏閣と十二の僧坊を建て加えた。（七歳の亡児のために七区の仏閣を営んだ故に七ツ寺と称する）このようにして仁和三年七月の水害、天慶四年の兵火などに遭って堂宇が衰廃したが、六条天皇の御代に尾張権守大中臣朝臣安長が寵愛していた女子が仁安二年六月十五日に亡くなったので、娘の夫である豊後守親実と共に計らって、その菩提のために彼の七区の伽藍および十二僧坊を再建し、稲園山長福寺と改号し、紀伊国高野山の支院とした。そして十五所権現を勧請して当寺の護法の鎮守とした。

They built an altar and purified the ground, enshrined Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) on the altar, burned the famous incense called "Kyakushi Hangonkō" (Death-Reversing Soul-Returning Incense), and performed the Iō Mitsuhō (Healing King Secret Dharma). The incense smoke covered the child's face, and he immediately revived, allowing father and son to recognize each other. They spoke of their mutual affection for a while, but then the child died completely. Having no choice, they buried him at Shōgaku-in and built seven temple buildings and twelve monk quarters in the twelfth month of Enryaku 6 (787) for his spiritual benefit. (It is called Nanatsu-ji [Seven Temples] because seven temple buildings were constructed for the seven-year-old deceased child.) In this way, the temple buildings fell into decline due to floods in the seventh month of Ninna 3 (887), fires of war in Tengyō 4 (941), and other disasters. However, during the reign of Emperor Rokujō, when a beloved daughter of Owari no Gon-no-Kami Ōnakatomi no Asomi Yasunaga died on the 15th day of the sixth month of Jin'an 2 (1167), he consulted with his daughter's husband, Bungo no Kami Chikasane, and rebuilt those seven temple buildings and twelve monk quarters for her spiritual benefit. They renamed it Tōen-zan Chōfuku-ji and made it a branch temple of Kōya-san in Kii Province. They also invited the Fifteen Gongen deities to serve as the protective guardian deities of the temple.
