琵琶島の古事
横江氏の女師長公に別れ
奉りしあとにて御 形見（かたみ）
の琵琶に離恨（りこん）をこめ
よつの緒のしらへに
かけて三ッ瀬川
沈み果しと
君に伝へよ
と一首の和歌を
残して溺死（できし）せり
故に琵琶池琵
琶島の称こゝに
起る委（くは）しき事は
枇杷島の条に譲（ゆづ）
りぬ
日潤
身をしつむふかき
おもひはしら菊の
つゆのなさけや
淵となりけむ

現代語訳
琵琶島の古事
横江氏の女が師長公（しちょうこう）にお別れ申し上げた後、御形見の琵琶に離別の恨みを込めて、
「四つの緒の調べにかけて三ッ瀬川、沈み果てしと君に伝えよ」
と一首の和歌を残して入水自殺した。それゆえに琵琶池・琵琶島の名称がここに起こった。詳しいことは枇杷島の項目に譲る。

The Ancient Tale of Biwa Island
After the daughter of the Yokoe clan parted from Minister Shichō, she poured her resentment over their separation into his keepsake biwa, and left behind this waka poem:
"Tell him that I have sunk to the bottom of Mitsuse River, my feelings tied to the tuning of these four strings"
Then she drowned herself. Thus arose the names Biwa Pond and Biwa Island. For more details, see the section on Biwajima.

The deep feelings that led her to drown herself - perhaps the tender dew of white chrysanthemums became this deep pool
