牛頭天王を祭るに俄の造

なき夜祭りなりおもひ付

のこんの犢鼻褌（ふどし）し

其 看板（かんばん）に新そら豆

上畑裏（うわばたうら）
天王祭の作り物
この辺りの町々では六月一日から牛頭天王を祭るのに、にわか作りの造り物を大仕掛けで作って、他に類のない夜祭りである。思いつきの珍しいことは、大きな酒樽の中に裸の男で紺の褌をした者が数十人入って、逆さまにうつ伏せになって尻を持ち上げて並んでいて、その看板に「新そら豆あり」と記してあるなどの類である。

曲亭馬琴の漫遊録にこのそら豆の絵を描いて、江戸の夜宮の造り物もこれには及ばないということを書いている。
ここに図で示したのは三十三所の観音を写し、常香の代わりに鋸屑を焚いて蚊遣りとしたのも、また一笑するに堪えるものである。

Tennō Festival Decorative Floats
In the neighborhoods around here, from the first day of the sixth month, when they worship Gozu Tennō, they create elaborate temporary decorative displays for this unique night festival unlike any other. One amusing novelty involves dozens of naked men wearing only dark blue loincloths crowded into a large sake barrel, lying face-down upside down with their buttocks raised up in a row, with a sign reading "Fresh broad beans available" and similar displays.

Kyokutei Bakin drew a picture of these "broad beans" in his travel record (Man'yūroku), writing that even Edo's night shrine festival displays cannot match this.
What is illustrated here shows the thirty-three Kannon temples copied, and instead of regular incense, sawdust is burned as mosquito repellent - this too is quite amusing.
