を免（まぬ）かれ給ひぬそれよりして天叢雲（あまのむらくの）名を改め草薙（くさなぎ）の神剣【剱】と
ぞ申けるかくて常陸（ひたち）陸奥（むつ）等の夷賊（いぞく）征伐（せいばつ）畢（をは）つて信濃坂を
越（こ）え再び宮簀媛（みやすびめ）命の家に淹留（えんりう）し給ひしが別れに臨み神
剣【剱】を媛（ひめ）の許にとゞめ我帰京せば必 汝（なんぢ）が身を迎（むか）へん此剣【剱】を我 床（とこ）
の守（まもり）とせよとのたまひ置て徒行（かち）より出まし近江の胆吹（いぶき）山の
悪神を退治（たいぢ）し給ひけるに其神化して小蛇となり御道に横（よこた）はれ
り 尊又心して過（すぎ）させ給ひしかども山神 毒気（どくき）を吐（は）きければ
御心 乱（みだ）れにけり夫より伊勢に移り給ひ能褒野（のほの）にて御病甚
くなりにければ武彦（たけひこの）命をして 天皇に事のよしを奏して竟（つゐ）に
かくれ給ひぬ御年三十也 天皇聞し召して哀（かなし）み給ふ事 限（かぎり）なし
群卿（ぐんきやう）百 寮（りやう）に仰せて伊勢国能褒野に納（おさ）め奉らしめ給ひ
しに白鳥と成て大倭（やまとの）国をさして飛行 琴弾原（ことひきはら）に留（とゞま）る其所に
また陵（みさゝき）を作らしめられければ又飛て河内の古市（ふるいち）に留る其所に

を免れ給いました。それよりして天叢雲の名を改め草薙の神剣と申すようになったのです。こうして常陸、陸奥等の蛮族征伐を終えて信濃坂を越え、再び宮簀媛命の家に滞在されましたが、別れに臨み神剣を媛の許に留め置き、「我が帰京すれば必ずあなたを迎えよう。この剣を我が床の守りとせよ」と仰せになって、徒歩で出発されました。近江の伊吹山の悪神を退治されたところ、その神が化けて小蛇となり、御道に横たわっていました。尊は注意して通り過ぎられましたが、山神が毒気を吐いたので、御心が乱れてしまいました。それから伊勢に移られ、能褒野にて御病気が甚だしくなったので、武彦命をして天皇に事の次第を奏上させ、ついにお隠れになりました。御年三十歳でした。天皇はお聞きになって限りなく悲しまれました。群卿百寮に仰せになって伊勢国能褒野に埋葬申し上げさせられましたが、白鳥となって大和国をさして飛行し、琴弾原に留まりました。その所にまた陵を作らせられたところ、また飛んで河内の古市に留まり、その所に

escaped from peril. From that time forth, the name Ame-no-Murakumo was changed and it came to be called the Kusanagi divine sword. Having thus completed the subjugation of the barbarian tribes of Hitachi, Mutsu and other provinces, he crossed Shinano Pass and again stayed at the residence of Miyasu-hime no Mikoto. When the time came to part, he left the divine sword with the princess, saying, "When I return to the capital, I will surely come for you. Let this sword be the guardian of my bed," and departed on foot. He went to subdue the evil deity of Mount Ibuki in Ōmi Province, but that deity transformed into a small serpent and lay across his path. Though the prince carefully passed by, the mountain deity exhaled poisonous vapor, which disturbed his mind. From there he moved to Ise, and at Noho Plain his illness became severe. He had Takehiko no Mikoto report the situation to the Emperor, and finally passed away. He was thirty years of age. When the Emperor heard this, his grief knew no bounds. He commanded the court nobles and all officials to bury the prince at Noho Plain in Ise Province. However, the prince became a white bird and flew toward Yamato Province, alighting at Kotohiki Plain.
