裏書はいずれも朱漆で記されているため、半ば文字が消えて読みがたいものが多いが、年号はすべて治承の文字が見えるので、天保の今日に至って約六百六十余年になる古物である。その内、陵王の面は弘安元年修復とあるので、これもまた今年に至って五百六十余年である。もし他の面も治承年間の修復であるならば、その製作の時を推測するに、おそらく千年を経るものもあるのではないか。

The inscriptions on the reverse are all written in vermillion lacquer, so about half the characters have faded and are difficult to read. However, since all the era names show the characters for Jishō, these are ancient objects dating approximately 660-plus years from today in the Tenpō era. Among them, the Ryōō mask shows "restored in Kōan 1st year," making it over 560 years old as of this year. If the other masks were also restored during the Jishō years, estimating the time of their original creation, there may perhaps be some that span a thousand years.
