Outwardly, he showed deep reverence and respect, inviting Yoshitomo into the study while having his accompanying warriors rest in distant separate rooms. In the kitchen, he gathered delicacies from mountain and sea to provide the finest hospitality. However, inwardly he secretly harbored treacherous intentions. He summoned his eldest son Kagemune (sometimes written as Kagemune) to a private room and spoke as follows: "According to the imperial edict from Rokuhara-dono that we received earlier, if we kill Yoshitomo and present him, our rewards will be whatever we desire." When he spoke thus, Kagemune immediately agreed. "In times like these, even if our lord were to go down to the eastern provinces from here, the Taira clan's power is so great that he would inevitably fall into someone's hands. Rather than that, we should take his head ourselves, gain the Taira's favor, and ensure our descendants' prosperity for generations to come." They secretly discussed their true intentions. Now, since the lord is a famous general known for his military prowess and fierce authority, even though he has only a small force with him, killing him would be a grave matter. As a perfect strategy, we should lure him into the bathhouse, and at that time invite his son-in-law Masukiyo to a separate room to entertain him with sake and food. When he hears that his lord has been killed and comes running out, Kagemune will wait in ambush behind the door and cut him down. Also, since Hashichirō possesses unparalleled great strength, we should assign him as the one to grapple with...
