頻に止め申せしに不用山
深く入給へは今は定ため
て虎の為に喰らはれ
虚敷成給ひけむ痛
はしさよといふ所へ袋を
荷ふて立出ふ人々驚
きあやしみて更【？】ゆへを
尋ぬるに尓〳〵の事々語
給ふ山人共気とくに思
ひ奉り我家に呼入
奉り説法を聴聞する
に貴き事いふ斗なし
各〳〵歓喜の涙を流所
に村中俄に震動して
余多遊ひ居たりける
子共声をはかりに呼喚
て逃迷ふ指も【「さしも」と読ませるのか】今まて外
念なく並居て説法を
聞ける者共子共泣声
に驚出て見れは怖しき
虎とも五斗出て来れり
是は如何成事そ此人々
幼けなき子共年老た
る親女童部は逃る共
逃のふへからすと止りて
防へき様もなし如何せんと
周章ふためく布袋は立
出て如何汝等人を取らん
為に来れるか何の故には
来たりけるそと宣ふ所に
虎共各〳〵口に草物有
ひし〳〵と取依り布袋の前に
積置たり珍敷花の枝
有よき草物沈香のえた
水精の珠
其外色〳〵の物
くはへて積上一面にうつくま
りぬ布袋御覧して扨
は前に示しける法問を貴く
覚て置て聞為成や更
は汝等に見性悟道の事を
教むとてあら〳〵説て示し合
に五五六七群かりし虎の
両眼より各〳〵一等に涙
現代語訳
しきりに引き止めたけれども聞き入れず、山
深く入っていかれたので、今はきっと
虎に食われて
亡くなってしまっただろう、痛
ましいことだ」と言っているところへ、袋を
背負って現れた人がいるので、人々は驚き
怪しんで、さらに詳しく事情を
尋ねると、このような事柄を語られた。山人たちは感心に思い
申し上げ、我が家にお呼び入れ
申し上げて説法を聞くと、
尊いことは言葉に尽くせないほどであった。
それぞれが歓喜の涙を流しているところに、
村中が急に震動して、
大勢遊んでいた
子供たちが声を限りに叫んで
逃げ惑う。それでも今まで他の
思いもなく並んで座って説法を
聞いていた者たちも、子供たちの泣き声に
驚いて出て見ると、恐ろしい
虎たちが五、六匹も出て来ていた。
これはいったいどういうことか。この人々や
幼い子供たち、年老いた
親や女童部は逃げようとしても
逃げようがなく、立ち止まって
防ぐ手立てもない。どうしようかと
慌てふためいているとき、布袋は立ち
上がって「どうして汝らは人を取らんが
ために来たのか。何の理由で
やって来たのか」と言われたところ、
虎たちはそれぞれ口に草木を
くわえて、ひしひしと寄り集まり、布袋の前に
積み置いた。珍しい花の枝や
良い草木、沈香の枝、
水晶の珠、
その外いろいろの物を
くわえて積み上げ、一面に美しく
飾った。布袋がご覧になって「さて
は前に示した法問を尊く
覚えて置いて聞き従ったのか。さらに
汝らに見性悟道のことを
教えよう」とて、あらあらと説いて示し合わせると、
五匹六匹七匹と群がっていた虎の
両眼からそれぞれ一様に涙が

persistently tried to stop him, but he paid no heed and went
deep into the mountains, so now surely
he must have been eaten by tigers
and perished. How pitiful!"
Just as they were saying this, a person appeared carrying a bag on his back. The people were surprised
and puzzled, and when they inquired further about the circumstances,
he told them about these events. The mountain people thought this admirable
and invited him into their homes.
When they listened to his sermons,
the noble teachings were beyond words.
Each person shed tears of joy, when
suddenly the entire village shook,
and many children who had been playing
cried out at the top of their voices
and fled in confusion. Even those who until now had been
sitting peacefully without other thoughts, listening to the sermon,
were startled by the children's cries
and came out to see fearsome
tigers—five or six of them—approaching.
What could this mean? These people,
the young children, the elderly
parents and servant girls wanted to flee but
had nowhere to run. They stopped, having
no way to defend themselves. "What shall we do?"
they said in great confusion. Then Hotei stood
up and said, "Why have you come
to take people? For what reason
have you come here?" At this,
the tigers each carried plants in their mouths,
pressing close together, and piled them
in front of Hotei. Rare flower branches,
fine plants, aloe wood branches,
crystal jewels,
and various other things
they carried in their mouths and piled up, beautifully
decorating the entire area. When Hotei saw this, he said, "So
you have respectfully remembered and
heeded the dharma teaching I showed you before. Now I shall
further teach you about
seeing your true nature and attaining enlightenment." Then he preached and instructed them roughly,
and from both eyes of the tigers—five, six, seven of them gathered there—
tears flowed uniformly
