をとくるなりこのゆへに懸る
業世に住とてもすこしも苦
しき事なし縁なき者に
縁を結ひ縁有ものには
仏法をしめす更何の
愁へ苦しむ思ひ有らむ
答給へは沙門はうちうなつき
大に笑ひて曰く我も又其
如く是より天竺に形を分
て顕はし衆生を導引
侍んそ往昔霊鷲山に
釈尊顕れ給ひて御説法
の有し時和君と某と一所
に有て是を聴聞せし其時
往別てより一千五百余年
以来逢不奉久しさよ
宣ひて頓てまたこそ対
面すへけれとて沙門と布袋
と手をとりつくしけり
物語りしたまひ或は笑ひを
含みなとし給ふ何事にて
か有けん言葉は天竺の言
葉なれはあたりに有け
る人も其分ちをはしらす
かくて暇乞し念比に別を
とり沙門は雲に乗て虚
空をさして上給ふ布袋
はしはらく見をくりつゝ
其日は
そこに
とゝまり
給ふ
現代語訳

を得るのである。このゆえに、このような業を世に住んで行うとても、少しも苦しいことはない。縁なき者には縁を結び、縁ある者には仏法を示す。更に何の愁いや苦しみの思いがあろうか」
と答えられると、沙門はうなずいて大いに笑い、「私もまたその通りである。これより天竺に姿を現して衆生を導引いたしましょう。昔、霊鷲山に釈尊が現れられて御説法をなされた時、あなたと私は一緒にいてそれを聴聞した。その時の別れから一千五百余年来、お会いできなかった長さよ」と言って、「やがてまた対面することでしょう」として、沙門と布袋は手を取り合った。
物語をなさったり、時には笑いを含んだりされる。何事であったのか、言葉は天竺の言葉であったので、あたりにいた人もその内容を知ることはできなかった。
こうして暇乞いをして別れの時に、沙門は雲に乗って虚空へ向かって昇っていかれる。布袋はしばらく見送りつつ、その日はそこに留まられた。

Such is the way I obtain [divine support]. Therefore, even though I dwell in this world performing such deeds, there is no suffering whatsoever. For those without karmic connections, I create connections; for those with connections, I teach the Buddha's dharma. What sorrows or sufferings could there possibly be?"
When he answered thus, the monk nodded and laughed heartily, saying, "I too am the same. From now on, I shall manifest my form in India and guide sentient beings. Long ago, when Shakyamuni Buddha appeared on Vulture Peak and gave his teachings, you and I were together listening to those sermons. Since we parted at that time, it has been over fifteen hundred years that we have not met!" He said, "We shall surely meet again before long," and the monk and Hotei took each other's hands.
They conversed together, sometimes sharing laughter. Whatever they spoke of, since their words were in the Indian language, the people nearby could not understand their conversation.
Thus they bid farewell and parted. The monk mounted the clouds and ascended toward the void. Hotei watched him go for a while, and that day he remained there.
