現代語訳
【上段】
○狐（キツネ）は犬に似て
鼻が尖り、尾が大きい。
昼は隠れ、
夜に出る。馬の骨を
くわえて吹くと光を出
して食べ物を求める。これ
を狐火という。また玉を
くわえて光を出すとも
言う。百歳を経て
北斗七星を拝んで化けると
言われている。
○猫（ネコ）は瞳が子・午・卯・
酉の時刻には糸のようになり、
寅・申・巳・亥には満月
のようになり、丑・未・辰・戌に
は棗の種のようになる。鼻は
いつも冷たいが、夏至の
一日だけ暖かくなる。
○狸（タヌキ）には虎狸があり、猫
狸がある。猫狸は臭くて
食べることはできない。頭が尖り
口が四角いものを虎狸という。
○貉（ムジナ）は狐狸に似て
いる。毛は黄色くて褐色
である。よく眠り、昼
は伏せて夜に出る。
○貒（アナグマ）は犬に似て口が
尖り、足が黒く、毛は褐
色である。尾と足が短く、
歩くのが遅い。耳が
聞こえず人を恐れる。

○The fox resembles a dog
with a pointed nose and large tail.
It hides during the day
and comes out at night. When it holds
a horse bone in its mouth and blows, it emits light
to search for food. This
is called fox-fire. It is also said
that it holds a jewel in its mouth
to produce light. It is said that after
living a hundred years,
it worships the Big Dipper and transforms.
○The cat's pupils become
thread-like during the hours of rat, horse, rabbit, and
rooster; they become like a full moon
during tiger, monkey, snake, and boar hours;
and like date pits during ox, sheep, dragon, and dog hours.
The nose is always cold, but becomes
warm on the day of summer solstice.
○Among raccoon dogs, there are tiger-raccoons
and cat-raccoons. Cat-raccoons are smelly
and should not be eaten. Those with pointed heads
and square mouths are called tiger-raccoons.
○The badger resembles
foxes and raccoons. Its fur is yellow
and brown in color.
It sleeps well, lies down during the day
and comes out at night.
○The Asian badger resembles a dog with a pointed
snout, black feet, and brown
fur. Its tail and legs are short,
and it walks slowly. Its ears
are deaf and it fears humans.
