ものであるといわれる
別名を狻猊（しゅんげい）と
いう
○獬豸（かいち）は
異国の獣
である。その姿は
獅子に似て
一角がある。別名を
神羊（しんよう）という
よく正邪を
見分ける。皐陶（こうよう）が
裁判を行う時、
その罪に疑いが
あるものには獬豸
にあたらせる
罪のあるものはこれ
を食べ、罪のない
者は食べないという

It can run
five hundred ri in one day.

eats tigers and leopards,
therefore
even tigers and leopards
greatly
fear the lion.
It is a fierce beast
of Tenjiku (India)
that possesses supernatural powers
and abilities,
it is said.
It is also called
Shungei.
○The Kaichi (Xiezhi) is
a beast from
foreign lands. Its form
resembles a lion
with one horn. It is also called
Shinyo (Divine Sheep).
It can well distinguish
right from wrong. When Gao Yao
administered justice,
those whose guilt was
in doubt were subjected
to the Kaichi.
It eats those
who are guilty, but does not
eat the innocent.
