現代語訳
【上段】
○虎（とら）は形が
猫のようで
大きさは牛の
ようである。色は黄色で
前足が太く、
全身の力が
前足に集中している。夜
行く時、一つの目は光を
放ち、一つの目は物を
見る。声は雷の
ようで、よく風を
起こす。山の
上で虎が一声
吼えると、百獣が恐れ
すくむという。
○騶虞（すうぐ）は白虎
である。その
尾は身体より
長い。仁獣（仁徳のある獣）
である。
○豹（ひょう）は形が
虎によく似ているが
小さい。頭は丸く、
顔は白い。毛色は
薄黄色で白い
斑点がある。
非常に美しいため、
自分の毛並みを
愛でるという。

英語訳
[Upper section]
○The tiger has a form
like a cat
but is as large as
an ox. Its color is yellow
with thick front legs,
and all the strength of its body
is concentrated in its front legs. When it
travels at night, one eye emits
light while the other eye
sees objects. Its voice is like
thunder and it can well
raise winds. When a tiger
roars once on a
mountain, all beasts are said to
cower in fear.
○The Zougu (Zouyu) is a white tiger.
Its
tail is longer than
its body. It is a
benevolent beast.
○The leopard has a form
very similar to a tiger
but is smaller. Its head is round
and its face is white. Its fur color is
pale yellow with white
spots.
It is extremely beautiful, therefore
it is said to admire
its own coat.
