現代語訳
【上段】
○梟（フクロウ）は形が鳶（トビ）に
似て小さく、頭が大きくて
丸く、眼が大きい。夜に出て
昼間は隠れている。雌は
声が叫ぶようである。母鳥
を食うという不孝の
鳥と言われている。
○鵲（カササギ）は大きさがカラスのよう
である。尾が尖って長く、
嘴は黒い。食べると
疳病、消渇を治療する。
婦人は食べてはいけない。
○秧鶏（クイナ）は鶏に似て
小さい。頬が白く、嘴が
長く、尾が短く、背中
に白い斑点がある。田
沢のほとりに住む。
○鴗（カワセミ）は大きさが燕のようである。
嘴は体に比べて大きく尖って
長い。足の裏が紅色で
短い。水辺にいて
魚を捕る。土に穴を
掘って巣を作る。全身が
黒く青く光る。

[Upper section]
○The Keu (owl) resembles a kite
in shape but is smaller, with a large and
round head and large eyes. It comes out at night and
hides during the day. The female's
voice is like screaming. It is said to
eat its mother bird, and is called
an unfilial bird.
○The Shaku (magpie) is about the size of a crow.
Its tail is pointed and long,
and its beak is black. When eaten,
it treats convulsions and diabetes.
Women should not eat it.
○The Aukei (rail) resembles a chicken
but is smaller. Its cheeks are white, its beak
is long, its tail is short, and it has
white spots on its back. It lives
by rice fields and marshes.
○The Riu (kingfisher) is about the size of a swallow.
Its beak is large for its body, pointed and
long. The soles of its feet are red and
short. It lives by the water
and catches fish. It digs holes
in the earth to make nests. Its entire body
is black and shines blue.
