一、同十二年子年五月二十八日、六十歳にて病死。神道葬祭、霊号は信彦霊社。後に土津大明神の御末社に御祭りを成し下され、葬所は猪苗代磐梯山南麓《東西七十間、南北四十二間、堰端にて六十六間の地面を御附け成し下され候》。紀州高野山の法名は法雲院殿要山正玄居士。
ただし病死の翌日、御使番中沢六右衛門を以て御香奠として銀十枚を下し置かれ、且つ葬式の儀は友松勘十郎へ仰せ付けられ、遺体を猪苗代へ葬送致し候。同六月六日、遺体を猪苗代へ葬送致し候節も、御見送りとして下川儀太夫を遣わされ候事。
加藤内蔵助様の御取り持ちを以て林家において出来候事実。
或る人、田中正玄の履歴言行一帖を作ることを請う。事実、余かつてその名を聞けども、その面を見ず。故に辞して肯んぜず。再三に至っても措かず。すなわちその稿に就いて、いささか大概を記す。曰く、田中氏は源姓より出ず。その先は勢州の人なり。正玄の祖は玄儀と曰う。甲州に移り《勢は伊勢なり、甲は甲斐なり》、

First, in the same 12th year, year of the rat, 5th month, 28th day, he died of illness at age sixty. He received a Shinto funeral, with the spirit name Nobuhiko Reisha. Later he was enshrined as a subsidiary shrine of the great deity Doshin, and his burial place was at the southern foot of Mount Bandai in Inawashiro {{granted land measuring 70 ken east-west, 42 ken north-south, and 66 ken at the weir edge}}. His Buddhist name at Koyasan in Kishu Province was Houn-in-den Yōzan Shōgen Koji.
However, on the day after his death from illness, through messenger Nakazawa Rokuemon, ten pieces of silver were granted as incense money, and the funeral arrangements were entrusted to Tomomatsu Kanjūrō, with the body being transported for burial to Inawashiro. On the 6th day of the same 6th month, when the body was transported to Inawashiro for burial, Shimokawa Gidayū was also sent as an escort.
This was accomplished at the Hayashi house through the mediation of Lord Katō Kuranosuke.
A certain person requested that a volume recording the career and conduct of Tanaka Shōgen be compiled. In truth, I had previously heard his name but never seen his face, so I declined and would not consent. Even after repeated requests, I would not relent.
