現代語訳
はなはだ延びた男ばかりで、思うがままに遊びたいと思い、二人で五日限りの金十両を借りてくる。玉やの「葛の葉」という遊女と馴染みになったが、葛の葉がもう一人の男の所にも通うと聞いて、最初のうちは嫉妬と怒りを起こし、向こうの店で「玉藻」という遊女を買えば、高い張りとやら何とやらでもてなされる。在原業平でも武蔵野へ裸足で逃げ、光源氏でも縁の下に隠れるくらい（の状況である）。
「こいつはさてさて面白い」と思えば、早くも五日の期限が来て約束の日が切れたとて、金主の方から催促に遭い、金高十両と聞き、仕方がないので親たちが十両ずつ出し、金主の方へ十両返してみれば、後に十両が残る。なるほど、こいつは得なものだ。

The men were terribly dissolute and wanted to play as they pleased, so the two of them borrowed ten ryō for a five-day period. He became intimate with a courtesan called "Kuzu-no-ha" (Arrowroot Leaves) at the Tamaya, but when he heard that Kuzu-no-ha was also seeing another man, he initially felt jealous and angry. When he bought the services of a courtesan called "Tamamo" at the rival establishment, he was entertained with expensive hospitality and such. Even Ariwara no Narihira would flee barefoot to Musashino, and even Hikaru Genji would hide under the veranda in such circumstances.
Thinking "this is quite amusing indeed," the five-day term quickly arrived and the promised deadline passed, so he was pressed for payment by the moneylender. Hearing the amount was ten ryō and having no choice, both sets of parents each contributed ten ryō. When they returned ten ryō to the moneylender, ten ryō remained afterward. Indeed, this fellow made a profit from it.
