よほど良い暮らしをしている町人夫婦連れで、二十両持って博打をしに来るとは馬鹿なもの。品川の屋台の主人も、大磯通いとは誠に花のお江戸の夫婦である。
夫婦の者は駕籠を二挺立てて、江の島、鎌倉、浦賀、箱根へと湯治をして、それより大和巡りをするつもりで、一日に六、七里ずつの道程で名所旧跡は言うに及ばず、神社仏閣残らず回り、まことに楽しみの最上品で、奈良の旅籠屋に二日逗留し、三輪の茶屋を昼休みとして京へ出ようとする。
しかし、とかく道に迷って奈良へ戻り、大坂へ行こうとすれば三輪へ出て、ここで狐に化かされた所で、あちらこちらと這い回る。ぶらつく内に四十両使い果たし、元は二十両の得であったけれど、さっぱり路銀に困り、残りの二分で舟に乗れば大風が起こって「助け舟、助け舟」と言う内に品川に着く。

A merchant couple living quite well, coming to gamble with twenty ryō in hand - what fools they are. Even the proprietor of a small establishment in Shinagawa frequenting Ōiso - truly this is the way of couples in flourishing Edo.
The couple arranged two palanquins and planned to visit Enoshima, Kamakura, Uraga, and Hakone for hot spring cures, then continue on a pilgrimage around Yamato province. Traveling six to seven ri per day, they would visit not only famous scenic spots and historical sites but also shrines and temples without exception - truly the finest form of pleasure. They stayed two days at an inn in Nara and planned to rest at a teahouse in Miwa during the day before heading to Kyoto.
However, they kept getting lost on the roads and returned to Nara. When they tried to go to Osaka, they ended up in Miwa again. Here, having been bewitched by foxes, they wandered about in all directions. While wandering around, they spent all forty ryō. Though they had originally profited twenty ryō, they were now completely short of travel money. With only two bu remaining, they boarded a boat, but a great storm arose, and while crying "rescue boat, rescue boat," they arrived back in Shinagawa.
