現代語訳
福徳屋という名高い金貸しがこの話を聞き、「毎日一杯ずつの利分は金を貸すよりもはなはだ得である。その上、『寝るの下るの』という心配がなければ」と言って、毎日千両ずつ持って行くのが良かろうと、手代番頭を呼んで相談する。
【台詞】
「一日千両のつもりで一ヶ月三万両まで、催促なしに貸しましょう」
狐の方でもこれにははなはだ困り果て、とうとう店は潰れそうになった。貸す方は人情を得たもので、金を借りした者どもへ枕神に立つ。
「なんとか福徳屋の金を明日中に元本利息揃えて返すべし。後が問うも乞うも行けぬと言うなら、そこはおいらが飲み込んで半生させてやる。それで良し、そう言え。もし返さぬときはいよいよ貧乏に守るべし」
英語訳
A famous moneylender called Fukutokuya heard this story and said, "The daily profit from one cup at a time would be far more profitable than lending money. Moreover, if there's no worry about 'sleeping or declining' [defaulting on loans]," he called his clerks and chief clerks to consult about taking a thousand ryō there every day.
[Dialogue]
"At the rate of one thousand ryō per day, I'll lend up to thirty thousand ryō in a month, without demanding repayment."
Even the fox side was extremely troubled by this, and the establishment was on the verge of collapse. The lender, having gained people's sympathy, stood as a pillow god before those who had borrowed money.
"Somehow repay Fukutokuya's money with principal and interest all together by tomorrow. If you say that afterwards neither asking nor begging will work, then I'll swallow that myself and let you live half a life. That's fine, say that. If you don't repay, you shall be kept in poverty forever."
