くなる道理がある。もっとも、たまたま疱瘡を受けることもあるが、これはすなわち胎毒があるため、一時的な虚弱状態に乗じて侵すのであろう。また一生の間疱瘡にかからない場合には二つの理由がある。世の人が知るところでは、天赦日に出生する子はこれを免れると言われている。また生まれてから食事や養生、服薬によって免れることもある。
○問うて言うには、中古以前は痘（天然痘）で死ぬことは稀で、麻疹で過半数が死んだと言われていますが、どういうことでしょうか。
答えて言うには、昔の諺に「疱瘡は容貌を定め、麻疹は命を定める」と言う。古今で異なることがあるはずはない。つまるところ胎毒の多少によって軽重があると思われる。その理由は、富貴の家では溺愛が専らで、

衣食ともに甘美で温飽を過ごし、生来の胎毒を培い肥やして肌体を軟弱にするので死証も多くなるであろう。
あの山野の険しい境地では衣食ともに粗末で、かつて胎を受けた昔から毒を積み蓄えていないため死ぬ者も少ない。ただ容貌が以前と変わることを言うのであろう。麻疹は人が軽く考えがちなものなので、外来の疫邪が深く毛穴に入って遂に熱が臓府を焦がし、あるいは解毒を用いず、また宿食・風寒・虫積のために麻毒が発起せずして死ぬことを言うのであろう。
○問うて言うには、その胎毒というのは生まれる時に母の悪露を飲んで生じるのでしょうか。

both clothing and food are luxurious and they live in warmth and satiety to excess, cultivating and fattening the innate fetal toxins and making the body soft and weak, so death cases would be numerous.
In those harsh mountain wilderness areas, both clothing and food are meager, and since they have not accumulated and stored toxins from the time they received their fetal essence, few die. It probably just refers to changes in appearance from before. Since people tend to think lightly of measles, external epidemic pathogens penetrate deeply into the pores and eventually the heat scorches the organs, or because no detoxification is used, or due to accumulated food, wind-cold, or parasitic accumulation, the measles toxin fails to emerge properly and death occurs.
