間（かん）にも略（ほゞ）知る人あり八丈 嶋（がしま）に朝夕（あさゆう）喰物にして益（ゑき）ある
よし都菅草（あしたばくさ）と云あり此物胎毒を生ぜざるにや
曽て痘瘡なしといへり然れば養生 禁忌（きんき）して免（まぬか）
るゝ品なきに非（あら）ず是故に世の人用て効（しるし）を得（ゑ）たるを以（もつ）

【右丁】
民間にもおおよそ知る人がある。八丈島に朝夕の食物にして益があるという、都菅草（明日葉草）というものがある。この植物は胎毒を生じさせないのか、かつて痘瘡になったことがないと言われている。そうであれば養生と禁忌によって免れる方法がないわけではない。このため世の人が用いて効果を得たものを、以下の末尾に記して知らせる。
○問うて言うには、『証治準縄』に「生まれ落ちてその子の臍帯を焼いて児に服用させれば痘瘡を免れ、あるいは軽くなる」と言っている。ある人がこれを用いたところ、三人の子のうち一人は死に、二人は全く治ったと言っていた。そうであれば八丈草も信じがたいのと似ている。

Among the common people, there are also those who roughly know about this. On Hachijo Island, there is something called miyakosuge-gusa (ashitaba grass) that is said to be beneficial when eaten morning and evening. Does this plant perhaps prevent the formation of fetal toxins? It is said that there has never been smallpox there. If so, there are indeed methods to escape through proper care and dietary restrictions. Therefore, I record at the end below what people in the world have used and found effective, to inform others.
○Asking: In the "Shōchi Junjō" (Standards for Diagnosis and Treatment), it says "when a child is born, if you burn the umbilical cord and have the infant take it, they will avoid smallpox or it will be mild." A certain person used this method, and among three children, one died and two were completely cured. If so, the Hachijo grass also seems similarly unreliable.
