英語訳

--- ## 【MOMO (Peach / *Prunus persica*)】 Peach (Tō) Flower — As recorded in *Honzō Wage* Japanese name: Momo (毛茂) Copied in the middle of the second month (February), Mizunoe-uma year (1822) 〔Seal: Wood Category〕 〔Seal: Medicinal Herb〕 According to *Yamato Honzō*: According to *Sōngjiāng Fǔzhì* (Songjiang Prefectural Gazetteer): Among peach blossoms, those with many petals (double-flowered), large, and red in color are named "Féng Táo" (縫桃, Sewn Peach). Those of deep crimson are called "Hibai" (緋棑, Scarlet Peach). Those that are white are called "Bì Táo" (碧桃, Green/Azure Peach). According to *Wamyō Ruijushō*: Peach (momo) According to *Hanwu Neizhuan*: The peach of the Queen Mother of the West (Xīwángmǔ) bears fruit once every three thousand years. Xīwángmǔ is the name of an immortal. The character 桃 is read "Tō" (from Chinese "Táo"); Japanese name: momo. According to *Yōshi Kango Shō*: Nishiki-momo (Brocade Peach / 錦桃) From the *Man'yōshū*: "Waga yado no hayamomo no shita ni tsukiyo mishi mita kokoro yoshi utate kono goro" (At the early-ripening peach tree in my garden I watched the moonlit night — how pleasant it was to see; how troubling it is these days) — Hitomaro *Yamato Honzō* 〔recorded in the Fruit Tree section〕 A certain book says: The deity Izanaki-no-Mikoto took three peach fruits and struck the evil spirits (*hisamé*) with them; the wicked demons all fled. Therefore, by imperial decree, the peach tree was named "Itsunokamu-Tomi-no-Mikoto" (稜威神富の命, the August Spirit of Power). Furthermore, in the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan), there is the account of driving away demons with the peach — and this is a matter found in both Japanese and Chinese tradition alike. --- ## 【SUMOMO (Japanese Plum / *Prunus salicina*)】 Plum (Li) Flower — Two varieties One variety has white flowers Copied on the twenty-fifth day of the second month of the same year 〔Seal: Fruit Tree Category〕 According to *Zōho Tashiki-hen*, Five Fruits section: Li (り) Japanese name: Sumomo Alternative name: Kakei-shi (嘉慶子) According to *Wamyō Ruijushō*: Li-shi (Sumomo) According to *Kenmyō-en*: The character 李 is read "Ri"; alternate name: Kōkichi (黄吉) Japanese name: Sumomo As recorded in *Wakan Sansai Zue*, Five Fruits section: Li (Sumomo; Tang Chinese reading: Rī) 〔Reading: Ri〕 Kakei-shi (嘉慶子) Kuryōka〔Sanskrit / Brahmanic writing〕 Japanese name: Sumomo Mugi-sumomo (Wheat Plum / 麦李) Japanese name: Sa-momo (左毛々) The plum resembles the peach in shape but has a sour taste. Hence it is called "Suan Táo" (酸桃, Sour Peach) — which became "Sumomo." --- ## 【HIGAN-ZAKURA (Equinox Cherry / *Prunus subhirtella*)】 〔Seal: Flowering Tree〕 Higan-zakura (彼岸桜) Flower Copied in the middle of the second month, Mizunoe-uma year (1822)
