## 【ツバキ（椿）】
**大和本草に曰く：**
日本書紀・天武天皇十三年（684年）三月の条に、吉野の人・宇閉直（うへのあたい）が白海石榴（ツバキ）を献上したとある。延喜式にも「ツバキ」を「海石榴」と書いている。和名抄（和名類聚抄）も同じである。その葉は厚い。「アツバノキ（厚葉の木）」という意味からきている、云々。

海石榴（ツバキ） 椿（和字）
椿は「木」と「喬木の類」の「樗椿（ちょちん）」であり、海石榴（ツバキ）とは全く異なる。
万葉集・本朝式・和名抄はいずれも「椿」と「海石榴」を合わせて「豆波木（ツバキ）」と訓じている。その由来は古くからのものであろうか。

## 【TSUBAKI (Camellia)】
**From the Yamato Honzō (大和本草):**
In the thirteenth year of Emperor Tenmu's reign (684 AD), third month, as recorded in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), a man from Yoshino named Uhe no Atai presented white Tsubaki (camellia, written as 白海石榴) as tribute. The Engishiki (延喜式) likewise writes "Tsubaki" as 海石榴 (literally "sea pomegranate"). The Wamyōshō (Wamyō Ruijushō) concurs. The leaves are thick. The name is said to derive from "Atsu-ba-no-ki" (厚葉の木, "thick-leaved tree"), and so forth.

**From the Wamyō Ruijushō (和名類聚抄):**
Tsubaki (椿): The Tōin (唐韻, Chinese rhyme dictionary) states the character 椿 is pronounced [by the fanqie method: Chōkurin no han]. Japanese name: Tsubaki (豆波木). It is the name of a tree.
The Yōshi Kango Shō (楊氏漢語抄) states: 海石榴 (Tsubaki). The Japanese name is the same as above. It is used in the Honchōshiki (本朝式, i.e., Engishiki) and other texts.
Written on the 22nd day of the second month (February), in the year Jingo (壬午, 1822).

**From the Wakan Sansai Zue (和漢三才図会), Section on Shrubs:**
海石榴 (Tsubaki) / 椿 (Japanese character)
The character 椿 belongs to the category of 喬木 (tall trees), specifically referring to the 樗椿 (Ailanthus/Toona type), and is entirely different from the 海石榴 (Tsubaki, camellia).
The Man'yōshū, the Honchōshiki, and the Wamyōshō all use both 椿 and 海石榴 together and read them as "Tsubaki" (豆波木). Whether this usage has long historical precedent remains a question.
