【KAIDO / FLOWERING CRABAPPLE (海棠)】
Yamato Honzō (Great Japanese Herbal):
Kaido (海棠, flowering crabapple)
In Jia Dan's "Hundred Flowers Manual" of the Tang dynasty,
it is called "the immortal among flowers,"
and the people of China also call it
"the noble friend among flowers."
○ According to the Wakan Sansai Zue, "Mountain Fruits" section:
Kaido-nashi (海棠梨) Tang pronunciation: Haitanri
In general, the names of flowering trees that include the character "海" (sea/ocean)
all refer to plants that came from overseas (i.e., from China).
[Seal] Flowering Tree
Copied on the fifteenth day of Yayoi (third month), Mizunoe-Uma year.
According to Shen Li's "Treatise on the Kaido" (海棠譜):
Only those of purple-crimson color
are properly called "kaido (海棠)."
The rest are merely "tōrinashibana (棠梨花, pear blossoms)."
The author (Ju) states:
What the world calls "kaido flower," and what is depicted in illustrations, refers to a plant with pale pink flowers said to resemble those of the apple tree (林檎). Among these, the variety with comparatively short stems and large flowers, with flowers of deep and pale pink and long drooping red flower stalks, is called "Suishi-kaido (垂糸海棠, Weeping Crabapple, Malus halliana)," and is considered the finest of all kaido flowers. There is also another variety called "Toshimi (杜子美) Kaido" — after Du Fu (Du Zimei) — commonly known as "Ko-ringo (小林檎, crabapple)." Its flowers are pale pink to pinkish-white and bear fruit very abundantly. There is yet another variety called "Seifu-kaido (西府海棠, Malus × micromalus)." However, kaido varieties that have arrived in Japan in recent times mostly do not bear abundant fruit.

【KAEDE / JAPANESE MAPLE (榿/楓)】
Honzō Ikka-gen (Personal Herbal Commentary) states:
Kaede (榿) Also known as: Ki (機) Kawete (訶恵底) Momiji (紅葉)
Keikanju (鶏冠樹, "cockscomb tree")
According to Tashiki (多識篇):
Japanese name: Kaite (加伊天)
Copied on the sixth day of Kosen (third month),
Mizunoe-Uma year.
There are several varieties of kaede (maple). The "fuuju (楓樹)" and "Tōkaede (唐楓)" are different species, and their leaves are all distinct. The fuuju is rare in Japan; there is a large specimen on Mount Nikkō. In Edo, there is also a large tree at the nursery Gunhōen (群芳園). Beyond these, I have not yet seen any others.
[Seal] Garden Tree
According to the Wakan Sansai Zue, "Aromatic Woods" section:
《Keikanoki (鶏冠木) / Kaede Tang pronunciation: Momichi》
Keikanju (鶏冠樹, "cockscomb tree")
Man'yōshū: Kawazute-ki (蝦蟇手木, "frog-hand tree")
Japanese name: Kabedeno-ki (加倍天乃水) Also: Kahirudeno-ki (加比留提乃木)
Commonly called "Momiji (毛美知)" in everyday usage.
According to the Honzō Kōmoku (Bencao Gangmu): The keikanoki has several varieties. Its leaves have pointed lobes resembling the hand of a frog (蝦蟇手). Typically with seven or eight lobes, or nine lobes; those with thirteen leaves are called "Jūni-hitoe (十二一重)."
Yamato Honzō:
Ki-ki (機木, kaede / maple)
Keikanoki (鶏冠木)
In Japan, the character 楓 (fū) is mistakenly read as "kaede." In the Wa-myō (Wamyō Ruijushō), the character 鶏冠木 is read as "kaede." It is also pronounced "kaerude." This is because its leaves resemble the hand (te/de) of a frog (kaeru).
[Seal] Garden Tree
According to the Wamyō Ruijushō:
《Keikanoki (鶏冠木) / Kahede-no-ki》
According to the Yōshi Kango-shō: 鶏冠木 = Kahede-no-ki (加倍天乃木)
According to the Benshoku Rissei: 鶏頭樹 = Kahirudeno-ki (加比留提乃木)
Note: These all refer to the same tree.
Man'yōshū (poem):
"Each time I see the frog-hand leaves (momijiru kaerute)
turning golden in my garden,
there is not a moment I do not think of my beloved."
