## 【AOKI — Japanese Laurel (Aucuba japonica)】
From the *Zōho Tashiki-hen* (Expanded Encyclopaedia of Plant Names), Trees section:
Aoki (阿於幾)
[Seal] Garden Tree
According to *Yamato Honzō* (Great Japanese Herbal):
《Ahaki (檍) / Aoki》 Alternate name: Mannenbranch (万年枝, "Ten-thousand-year branch")
Also called: Tōsei (冬青, "Winter-green")
Its flower is called:
Mannen-hana (万年花, "Ten-thousand-year flower")
Also simply: Aoki (青木, "Green tree")
The *Tōyō-sango* (桃葉珊瑚, "peach-leaf coral plant") belongs to the same category
as *Ōba-aoki* (large-leaved aoki), *Koba-aoki* (small-leaved aoki),
and *Nagaba-aoki* (long-leaved aoki).
The *Setsuri-sango* (雪裏珊瑚, "coral-in-snow") is commonly called
*Shimofuri-aoki* (霜降青木, "frost-speckled aoki") in Japan;
its leaves are mostly found on large-leaved varieties,
and it is not a variegated (spotted) variety but grows as a solitary (non-pollinating) plant.
Mizunoe-Uma year, Koshin (third month), sixth day.
According to the *Wamyō Ruijū-shō* (Japanese Name Thesaurus):
*Ahaki* (檍) — pronounced "oku (億)." The *Nihongi Shiki* records it as "Ahaki."
On reflection, it is also recorded as an alternate name for the *kashi* (oak/holm oak),
as found in the *Erya* commentary; it belongs to the catalpa (*azusa*) family.
---
According to *Kihinkyō* (Mirror of Rare Plants) and *Honzō Ikke-gen*:
《*Tōyō-sango* (桃葉珊瑚) — read: Aoki》
---
## 【TABIRAKODAMASHI (resembling Tabirako; possibly Veronica / Speedwell — *Veronica persica*?)】
*Genpō-sai* (元宝菜, "treasure-coin herb") — one variety
[Seal] Grass/Herb Category
---
## 【NAZUNA — Shepherd's Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)】
From the *Zōho Tashiki-hen*, Soft and Smooth Herbs section:
*Sai* (薺) — Japanese names: *Natsuna* (那豆那) / *Na* (那)
Alternate name: *Gosei-sō* (護生草, "life-protecting herb")
The seed/fruit is called *sai* (蒫).
■ *Natsuna* (荖蔍) 《*Shinsen Jikyō*》 *Sai* (萕/薺) 《Japanese name reading》 *Nani* (那耳) 《*Gōyaku Honzō* (Regional Medicines Herbal)?》
---
From *Kyūkō Yafu* (Wild Plants for Famine Relief):
*Saisa-ji* (斉菜児, "Nazuna" — Chinese name)
Mizunoe-Uma year, Koshin (third month), ninth day
*Saika* (斉花) 《*Keimō-zai* (鶏毛菜, "chicken-feather herb")》 《*Wamyō-shō*》
[Seal] Vegetable Category
[Seal] Medicinal Herb
---
According to the *Wamyō Ruijū-shō*:
*Sai* (薺) — As recorded in Cui Yushi's *Shokukyō* (Dietary Classic):
"*Sai* (斉/薺)" is pronounced using the fanqie notation "ji-kei (辞啓)" reversed,
in the upper-deflected tone (ascending tone), heavy reading.
Japanese name: *Natsuna* (奈都那).
---
According to the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia):
Buddhist monks (priests) take its stem and use it as a poker
to stir and tend the flame of an oil lamp.
Because it can repel mosquitoes and moths,
it is called *Gosei-sō* (護生草, "life-protecting herb").
Its flavor is sweet.
The ancient Chinese sage *Shi Kuang* (師曠) said:
"When the year is about to bring an abundant harvest,
the sweet herb (*amakusa*) sprouts first"
(*amakusa* here refers to *nazuna* / shepherd's purse)
"When the year is about to bring hardship,
the bitter herb (*nigakusa*) sprouts first"
(*nigakusa* here refers to *teireki* / pepperwort, *Lepidium* sp.)
Note: This is one of the seven herbs used in the Seven-Herb Rice Porridge (*nanakusa-gayu*)
eaten on the seventh day of the first month.
Its fruit (seed pod) is triangular in shape, not yet large when formed,
narrowing at the base, and resembles the plectrum (*bachi*) of a three-stringed instrument (*shamisen*).
Children rub two of its seed pods together, which produces a sound,
and for this reason it is also called *Sansen-sō* (三線草, "three-string herb").
