## 【A Plant of the Apiaceae (Carrot) Family — possibly Yabujirami (Torilis japonica) or Yabuseri (Oenanthe javanica)】 Flower of the Snake Bed plant (蛇牀, *Cnidium monnieri*) [from the *Honzō Wakai* (本草和解, Japanese Commentary on Materia Medica)]: Alternative names: Jazoku (蛇粟, "snake millet"), Jabei (蛇米, "snake rice"), Kishō (虺牀, "viper's bed"), Bashō (馬牀, "horse's bed"), Shōbi (墻蘼, "wall-climbing plant"), Shiekijōdoku (思益縄毒), Sōkyoku (棗棘) Japanese names: Yabujirami (也布之良美), Yabuseri (夜部世利) 【Seal】Medicinal herbs Transcribed faithfully from a true illustration on the 23rd day of the third decade of Kosen (3rd lunar month), Mizunoto-Hitsuji year (Bunsei 6, 1823). --- From the *Zōho Tashikihen* (Supplemented Encyclopedia), section on Fragrant Grasses (芳草類): Snake Bed plant (蛇牀): The Japanese name given is "Hirumushiro (比留牟志呂)." I [the author] have recorded this in a separate entry. As the term is the same, I omit it here. The *Bencao Gangmu* (*Honzō Kōmoku*, Compendium of Materia Medica) states: Snakes and vipers (*Cnidium* spp.) like to lie beneath this plant and eat its seeds, and thus it acquired this name. [Et cetera.] --- ## 【KASHIWA (Oak — *Quercus dentata* and related species)】 From the *Zōho Tashikihen*, section on Fragrant Woods (香木類): Haku (柏) Japanese name: Kae (加恵); commonly in the present day also called "Sohatate" (曽浪多天). Alternative name: Sokuhaku (側柏, Chinese arborvitae, *Platycladus orientalis*) Additional alternative name: Kiku (椈) [Author's note:] Haku (柏) is not the same as kashiwa (カシワ). The timber of haku is called "Asunaro" (阿須奈呂, *Thujopsis dolabrata*). There is also "Kotegashiwa" (児手柏). "Kashiwa" refers to "hō/pao" (枹), while "柏" is called "Toe" (刀ヱ). It has been associated with pine and also with cedar, and records confusing these are erroneous. Same season (3rd lunar month), 25th day, Hastily transcribed at the Usōan (Rain-Grass Hermitage). --- From the *Wamyō Ruijūshō* (Japanese Names Encyclopedia): Haku/Kae (柏) From the *Kenmeien* (兼名苑): The alternative name for haku (柏) is "kiku" (椈) [with the two readings "hya ku" and "ki ku"; Japanese name: Kahe (加閉)] Kashiwa (槲) From the Honzō (Bencao): "Kashiwa" (槲) [read with the sound of "to/斗"; meaning: separate/unloose] Koku (斛) Japanese name: Kashiwa (加之波) From the *Tōin* (唐韻, Tang Rhymes dictionary): Haku (柏) [read with the sound of "haku/帛"; Japanese name: as above] These are names for trees. 【Seal】Medicinal tree --- From the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (和漢三才図会, Japanese-Chinese Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Three Powers), section on Mountain Fruits: Hō/Kashiwa (枹) [characters for sound and form]: Ōba-ichi (大葉檪, large-leafed oak), Boku (樸, unworked wood), Kaku (槲), Soku (樕) The *Wamyō-shō* (Wamyō Ruijūshō) reads the character 蔛 as "Kashiwa" (加之波). The character 柏 is sometimes also used, but neither is strictly correct. [Author's own examination:] Various texts are mixed and confused, and it is difficult to be certain. However, what is today called "Kashiwa" (加之波) is this plant. It is not the "Sokuhaku" (側柏) of the *Yamato Honzō* (大和本草). The collected explanations in the *Wakan Sansai Zue* are the most coherent. --- ◦ From the *Bencao Gangmu* (本草綱目): Kunugi (檞, *Quercus acutissima*) has two varieties. One variety grows in clumps and the larger form is called "Hō/Kashiwa" (枹), also known as "Ōba-ichii" (大葉檪, large-leafed evergreen oak); alternative names: Boku (樸) and Kaku (檞). ◦ Kaku (檞), Hashaso (柞), Ichii (檪), Kashiwa (枹), and Nara (楢): the various commentaries on these are mutually confused, and so I shall now establish separate entries for each. Kaku [large-nutted big oak], Kashiwa [Quercus dentata], and Nara [Japanese oak] all have similar leaves but differ in size. Kaku is intermediate between Kashiwa and Nara. Hashaso (柞) belongs to the same group as these three but is a distinct species; although its leaves are similar, they differ. Hashaso (柞) and Ichii (檪) are two names for a single tree. Maruguri (丸栗, round chestnut), Hashaso (柞), Ichii (檪), Kashiwa (枹), Kaku (檞), Nara (孛落) trees, and Buna (橅, Japanese beech) all belong to one group; their leaves fall in winter. ◦ Master Cao (曹氏, Cao Shuya) states that "the new and old leaves of kashiwa (柞) alternate with one another" — this point merits further consideration.
