--- 【Note: Some plant of the family Euphorbiaceae.】 **Taikeki (大戟 / Euphorbia)** Alternative names: Kyōkyo (邛鉅), Gebasen (下馬仙) Japanese name: Hamahitogusa (波末比登久佐) — as recorded in Honzō Wakai (本草和解) ※ Other plants of the same group also exist. [Seal: Medicinal herbs (薬草)] Sketched on the 7th day of the 3rd lunar month (Yayoi), year Mizunoto-Hitsuji (癸未, 1823). --- 【Note: Jinchōge (沈丁花), Daphne odora.】 **According to Yamato Honzō:** Zuikō (瑞香; Jinchōge / Daphne), also called Sanbanka (山礬花; Kenchōge), and also Shichiriko (七里香). The name "Jinchōge" (沈丁花) is a name created by popular Japanese usage. [Seal: Flowering trees (花木)] Second lunar month (Kyōshō / 夾鐘), last ten days of the month, year Mizunoto-Hitsuji (癸未, 1823). Sketched from life on a rainy day while staying indoors. --- **According to Wakan Sansai Zue, section on Fragrant Woods:** Zuikō (瑞香) — Tang Chinese reading: Tsui Hyan (ツイヒヤン) — Japanese name: Rinchōge (リンチョウゲ) Also called: Mukkō (睦香) — per Wuzazu (五雑爼) Commonly known as: Jinchōge (沈丁花; シンチョウゲ) Erroneously also called: Rinchōge (里牟知也宇介) The Wuzazu states: It is said that a Buddhist monk on Mount Lu was napping beneath a mountain rock when he smelled an unusual fragrance. Upon waking, he traced the scent and discovered this flower. He therefore named it "Suikō" (睡香; "Sleeping Fragrance"). Later, someone who delighted in auspicious omens deemed it a good omen and changed the name to "Zuikō" (瑞香; "Auspicious Fragrance"). **The author states:** The Sansai Zue lists Sanban (山礬) and Zuikō (瑞香) as two separate species, but many other texts treat them as one. Sanban (山礬) does not shed its leaves in winter; it blooms white flowers in the third month, the blossoms being abundant and richly fragrant, and is therefore named "Un" (芸). Its leaves resemble those of the gardenia (梔子) and have serrated edges. The leaves of Zuikō also resemble those of the gardenia, but are without serrations. I suspect that Sanban and Zuikō belong to the same category, differing only in that one has white flowers and the other purple, and that Sanban has six-petaled flowers while Zuikō has four — a minor difference. Zuikō, too, does not shed its leaves in winter. --- **According to the Supplemented Tashiki-hen, section on Shrubs:** Sanban (山礬 / ハン) 《Japanese name》 Upon reflection, Rinchōge (里牟知也宇介 / リンチョウゲ) exists at Hata-dera Temple in Yamashiro Province, where it opens white flowers and bears fruit resembling pepper. 《Alternative names》 Shunkei (春桂; popular name) 《Supplementary alternative names》 Unkō (芸香), Teika (掟花; pronounced "Tei"), Teika (柘花; pronounced "Tei/Zheng"), Chōge (瑒花; pronounced "Yǎng"), Shichiriko (七里香) --- **According to Bencao Gangmu (本草綱目):** Zuikō (瑞香) — Jinchōge (ヂンチョウゲ) Also: Hanagonzō (ハナコンゼウ) Chigoshō (チゴセウ) (Dialect terms from Tajima Province, Banshu) --- **According to Honzō Ikkagen (本草一家言):** Sanban (山礬) — also known as: Teika (鄭花), Gyokuzuika (玉蘂花), Shichiriko (七里香), Kaidō (海洞), Chōge (瑒花) Kotobuki (寿; the author, Mōri Baien) states: Those things named "Kaidō" (海洞) comprise three kinds: Kaidōka (海洞花; Tobera / Pittosporum tobira), Sanban (山礬), and Togekirishima (刺桐; Kaidō / Harikiri) — among others. --- **The author further states:** Zuikō (瑞香) and Sanban (山礬) are seemingly one and the same species — similar to how there are red-flowered varieties among plants. Kizuikō (黄瑞香; Mitsumata / Edgeworthia chrysantha) Shirozuikō (白瑞香; Onishibari / Daphne pseudomezereum, also Natsuhōzuki) ※ In addition to these two, there are yet other distinct varieties. Kizuikō (黄瑞香) differs greatly in its character from the others. Shirozuikō (白瑞香) closely resembles Zuikō but is a separate species. Those that bloom without leaves in spring open with their leaves and flowers appearing in sequence together. ---
