艸木瓜（クサボケ）〔シドミ〕

草木瓜は高さ一〜二尺ほどで、野山に多く生える。花は赤色で、木（茎）に刺がある。果実は小さい。武蔵野ではシドミと呼ばれる草木瓜があり、その実の大きさは肥後梅ほどである。土地の人々はその酸味（酢）を利用する。榠樝（カリン）に対して、葉も実も似ているが、はるかに小さい、と言われている。〔この記述は〕当草（クサボケ）によく合致している。
そのほかに二種類を〔『大和本草』は〕載せているが、〔著者・梅園は〕まだそれらを見ていない。〔これらは〕本書（『大和本草』）の木瓜の部に記載されている。

The *kusa-mokke* (草木瓜) grows to a height of one to two *shaku* (approximately 30–60 cm), and is found abundantly in fields and wild places. The flowers are red, and the stems bear thorns. The fruit is small. In the Musashino region, there is a *kusa-mokke* called *shidomi*, whose fruit is approximately the size of a *Higo-ume* (肥後梅; a variety of plum from Higo Province). The local people make use of its sourness (vinegar-like quality). It resembles the *karin* (榠樝; *Pseudocydonia sinensis*; Chinese quince) in both leaf and fruit, though it is considerably smaller — so it is said. [This description] accords well with the present plant (kusaboke).
The *Yamato Honzō* lists two additional varieties [of related species] beyond this, but [the author, Baien,] has not yet been able to examine them. [These entries] are recorded in the section on *mokke* (木瓜; quince) in that work.
