「楊柳」はヤナギの通称であるが、特に取り分けて言う場合は、シダレ柳のことを指す。
李時珍（りじちん）〔『本草綱目』〕に曰く：楊柳は弱く、しなやかで、枝が垂れて流れるように揺れるため、これを「柳」と呼ぶ。
これすなわち楊柳（シダレヤナギ）のことである。

"*Yōryū*" (楊柳) is the general name for willows, but when used with particular distinction, it refers specifically to the weeping willow (*Shidareyanagiite*).
Li Shizhen [in the *Bencao Gangmu*] states: The *yōryū* (willow) is supple and drooping, its branches hanging down and swaying like flowing water — hence it is called *ryū* (柳; "willow").
This is therefore the *yōryū* (楊柳; the Weeping Willow / *Shidareyanagiite*).
