## 【A Type of Gumi (*Elaeagnus* sp.)】
**According to the *Zoho Tashikiden* (増補多識編; *Expanded Nomenclature Compendium*), in the section on Shrubs (*Kanboku-rui*):**
*Kotaishi* (胡頽子; *Elaeagnus* sp.) [Japanese name:] Upon the author's reconsideration: *Gumi* (久美) [Alternative names:] *Roto-shi* (盧都子; "roto berry") [source: *Bencao Gangmu* (綱目)]; *Hanganshun* (半含春; "half-blooming spring") [source: same, supplementary alternative names]; *Hotai-shi* (蒲頽子) [source: *Bencao Gangmu*]; *Jakkuniso* (雀児酥; "sparrow-butter") [source: *Pàozhì lùn* (炮炙論)]; *Kōwaba* (黄婆嬭; "yellow grandmother's milk")
[Seal: Medicinal Trees (薬木)]
---
**According to the *Yamato Honzō* (大和本草):**
*Kotaishi* (*Gumi*) In the common vernacular of the country, this is called *Higumi*.
The author, Hisatoshi, states: This is indeed the true *Nawashiro-gumi* (苗代グミ; *Elaeagnus pungens*, the thorny elaeagnus; "seedbed *gumi*").
The *Wamyō-shō* (和名鈔) gives the name *Moronari* (モロナリ).
**According to the *Honzō Wage* (本草和解; *Interpretations of the Honzō*):**
*Sawagumi* (沢グミ; "marsh *gumi*")
Farmers observe the ripening of this plant's fruit to know when it is time to prepare the paddies (田). It is therefore called *Nawashiro Kotaishi* (苗代胡頽子; "seedbed *gumi*").
---
**The author, Hisatoshi, reflects and states:**
Regarding *Sanshuyu* (山茱萸; *Cornus officinalis*, the Japanese cornelian cherry), herbal literature also records that "its fruit ripens at the time of the seedbed preparation (*nawashiro*)," and Chinese scholars say that this is indeed the *Sanshuyu*. However, the *Chikinsho* (地錦鈔; *Record of Ground Brocade*) carries an illustration of this [*gumi*] plant and identifies it as *Nawashiro-gumi*. Whether *Sanshuyu* also ripens at the seedbed season is not yet known. Whether it is truly this tree [i.e., the *gumi*] that is the correct identification, or [the *sanshuyu*], one should inquire of an expert in ornamental planting.
The *Yamato Honzō* states: The *Kotaishi* (*Higumi*) is a tree of six to seven *shaku* in height with soft branches. Its leaves resemble those of the pear, being long and narrow; the upper surface is green and the underside white. It flowers in the first and second months; the flowers are shaped like cloves (*chōkō*; *Syzygium aromaticum*) and hang pendulously at their peak. This description accords well with the present tree. Whether *Sanshuyu* is also called *Nawashiro-gumi* should be investigated further.
---
**According to the *Wamyō Ruijushō* (和名類聚抄; *Japanese Names Classified*):**
*Kotaishi* (*Moronari*) As stated in Mawan's *Shokukyō* (食経; *Classic of Food*), the *Yōjō Hiyō* (養生秘要; *Secrets of Health Preservation*), and other works:
*Kotaishi* [Japanese name: *Kumi* (久美); also called *Moronari* (毛呂奈里)]. [Note: the *Honchō-shiki* (本朝式; *Regulations of the Imperial Court*) uses the three characters 諸生子 for this plant.]
Thirteenth day of *Kōsen* (姑洗; third lunar month), year Kinoe-Saru (甲申) [Bunsei 7, 1824]: sketched from nature.
---
**[The author continues:]**
One should be aware that the *Honzō Wage* states that the fruit of *Sanshuyu* is gathered in the ninth and tenth months. Although the statement that [the *gumi*] ripens at the seedbed season is recorded in its name, the fact that it is said to "closely resemble *kotaishi* (*gumi*)" suggests that the two [plants, *sanshuyu* and *gumi*] may produce similar fruit—which would explain why they appear alike.

## 【A Type of Kaidō (海棠; Flowering Crabapple) — Wild Sea-crabapple (*Noka-idō*)】
*Kaidō* (海棠) Another variety. This is called *No-kaidō* (野海棠; "wild *kaidō*").
[Seal: Trees (木類)]
**According to the *Zoho Tashikiden* (増補多識編), in the section on Mountain Fruits (*Sanka-rui*):**
*Kaikō* (海紅) [Japanese name:] Upon the author's reconsideration: *Kaidō* (加伊多宇) [Alternative name:] *Kaidōri* (海棠梨; "sea-crabapple pear")
Same season [Kinoe-Saru (甲申)], sixteenth day of *Kōsen* (姑洗; third lunar month):
Sketched from nature.
