## 【*Himomo* (緋桃; Red Flowering Peach) — A Variety of Ornamental Peach (*Hanamomo*)】
*Himomo* (緋桃; Scarlet Peach) — Two varieties
[Seal: Fruit Trees (*Kamoku-rui*)]
Sketched from nature on the first day (*sakujitsu*) of *Kosen* (姑洗; the third lunar month) in the year *Kinoe-Saru* (甲申) [Bunsei 7, 1824], amid continuous rain.
---
## 【*Wasabi* (山葵; *Wasabia japonica*)】
**According to the *Yamato Honzō* (大和本草):**
*Sanki* (山葵) — Japanese name: *Wasabi* (和佐美) [The *Seika Hyakukyō* (生花百競) states: *Kanzai* (蔊菜)]
[Also:] *Yamahajikemi* (山薑) — [This character is used in the *Kangoshō* (漢語抄). The Chinese name is unknown.]
---
**According to the *Zōho Tashikiden* (増補多識編), in the section on Pungent Vegetables (*Kunsai-rui*):**
*Kanzai* (蔊菜) — Japanese name: Unknown [Aliases:] ■菜 (pronunciation uncertain) *Ratsubei-sai* (辣米菜)
Sketched from nature on the fifth day of the beginning of *Kosen* (the third lunar month) of the same year (甲申), on a stone dish (*ishizara*) on the desk.
---
**According to the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (和漢三才図会), in the section on Pungent Vegetables (*Kunsai-rui*):**
*Wasabi* (山葵) / *Yamahajikemi* (山薑) — [Source:] *Honchō-shiki* (本朝式; *Regulations of the Imperial Court*)
Japanese name: *Wasabi* (和佐比)
There exists separately a plant called *Yamahajikemi* (山薑), and moreover *kakitsubata* (杜若; *Iris laevigata*) is also called *Yamahajikemi* (山薑). These three things share the same name but are different plants.
[Author's note:] Its leaves resemble those of *aoi* (葵; hollyhock/mallow), hence it is popularly named *Yamaoi* (山葵; "mountain mallow"). Its roots resemble *shōbu* (菖蒲; sweet flag) and *ryōkyō* (良薑; greater galangal), hence it is popularly also named *Yamahajikemi* (山薑; "mountain ginger").
---
**[The author's personal investigation states:]**
Many books treat *Kanzai* (蔊菜) and *Wasabi* (山葵) as a single entity. The books cited above distinguish them as two separate things, and indeed their forms differ greatly, and their flowers and leaves also differ. It should be understood that they are not the same thing. Nevertheless, since the root of *Kanzai* is also extremely pungent in flavor, it is by this similarity that they have been confused with one another.
