## 【*Shidarezakura* (糸垂桜; Weeping Cherry) — A Variety of Cherry Blossom】
**According to the *Yamato Honzō* (大和本草):**
*Suishi-kaidō* (垂糸海棠) — Japanese name: *Itozakura* (イトザクラ) [also called *Hikanzakura* (ヒカンザクラ)]
The Chinese call this plant *Suishi-kaidō* (垂糸海棠; "Weeping Crabapple").
However, there exists a separate plant also called *Suishi-kaidō*.
That is to say, they share the same name but are different plants (*dōmei ichi-motsu*; same name, different things).
**According to the *Wakan Sansai Zue* (和漢三才図会), in the section on Mountain Fruits (*Sanka-rui*):**
*Itozarizakura* / *Itozakura* (糸垂桜; Weeping Cherry)
[Seal: Flowering Trees (*Hanaki*)]
**From the *Fubokushū* (夫木集):**
*Shirakawa ya chikaki omori no itozakura*
*Toshi no wo nagaku kimi zo mukaen*
("At Shirakawa, the weeping cherry of the nearby sacred grove—
May it face you, my lord, for many long years to come.")
Both flowers [two varieties] sketched from nature at the desk on the twenty-second day (*mochi-nanuka* / the seventh day after the full moon) of the beginning of *Kosen* (the third lunar month) of the year *Kinoe-Saru* (甲申) [Bunsei 7, 1824].

## 【*Hotokenoza* (仏の座; *Lamium amplexicaule*)】
**According to the *Yamato Honzō Bekuroku* (大和本草別録):**
*Hotoke no Za* (仏の座; "Buddha's Seat")
The leaves resemble the lotus flower (*renge*),
and are shaped like a Buddha's seat (throne).
One theory holds that *Hotoke no Za*
refers to the plant called *Tahirako* (田平子).
**According to the *Kankai Shokukyō* (巻懐食競):**
*Kōgasai* (黄瓜菜) — Japanese reading: *Tahirako* (タヒラコ)
In Japan, it is commonly read as *tahirako* (多比良古), and is also called *Hotoke no Za* (仏の座; "Buddha's Seat"). It is one of the seven spring herbs (*nanakusa*) eaten on *Jinjitsu* (人日; the seventh day of the first month). Although this plant bears the name *Hotoke no Za*, it is in fact a different plant [from the *Hotokenoza* properly so called]. The details are discussed in Volume 2 of the Summer Section.
[Seal: Herbs (*Kusarui*)]
**According to the *Gunpōreki* (群芳暦):**
*Genhōsō* (元宝草) — Japanese name: *Hotoke no Za* (ホトケノ座)
Commonly known in everyday usage as *kasumisō* (かすみ草; "mist grass"). ○ In Kasai (葛西), it is called *tonbisō* (トンビ草; "kite grass").
**According to the *Honzō Jūshin* (本草従新):** It grows in *Kodan* and *Tagatsuma* [place names in China]. A single stem grows straight upward, the leaves grow in opposite pairs (*taisei*), shaped like *genhō* (元宝; Chinese gold/silver ingots), facing upward, in three or four tiers, or five or six tiers. (And so forth.)
