伊勢物語初段に
在原業平朝臣が
春日の里に所領を
持っていて狩りに出かけた時、その場所に
とても美しい女性の
姉妹が住んでいるのを
見て心がそぞろになって
着ていた忍摺の
狩衣を引きちぎって
歌を書いて送った
「春日野の若紫の
摺衣
忍ぶの乱れ
限り知られず」
女は古歌で返した
「陸奥の忍ぶ
文字摺誰
ゆえに
乱れ初めにし
我ならなくに」

伊勢物語二十三段に
業平朝臣が河内
の国に愛人を
持って夜ごとに
通っていたけれども
この女は恨む様子も
なくて送り出していたので
男は何か他に心があって
このようにするのだろうかと思い疑って
前栽の中に隠れて
河内へ行く振りをして
見ていると
「風吹けば沖つ
白波竜田山
夜半にや君は
一人越ゆらん」
と詠んだのを聞いて
その後は河内へも
行けなくなって
しまった
ということだ

In the first section of the Tales of Ise,
Minister Ariwara no Narihira
had holdings in
Kasuga village and when he went out
hunting there, he saw
very beautiful sisters
living in that place,
and his heart became restless, so
he tore off the shinobu-zuri
hunting robe he was wearing
and wrote a poem to send:
"The young purple
dyed robes of Kasuga fields—
the confusion of love
knows no bounds"
The woman replied with an old poem:
"The shinobu
pattern-dyeing of Michinoku—
because of whom
did this confusion begin?
It was not because of me"

In the twenty-third section of the Tales of Ise,
Minister Narihira had
a lover in Kawachi
Province and visited her
every night, but
this woman showed no signs
of resentment and would send him off,
so the man thought suspiciously that
she must have feelings for another
and be acting this way, so
he hid in the garden
and pretended to go to Kawachi
and watched,
whereupon he heard her compose:
"When the wind blows, the white waves
of the offing at Mount Tatsuta—
are you crossing alone
in the middle of the night?"
After hearing this,
he could no longer
go to Kawachi
