いへりしかればずいふん我はしのぶと
思ひしを人の不審するに付てさほど
まで思ひよはれるを心にうちなげきて

○平兼盛
従五位駿河守

後撰集には兼盛王とある。
袋草紙に天暦の頃より平の
姓に変えたとある。
【同 中段】
この歌の心は、人に知られてはいけないと忍んで思っているけれども、忍びきれずにもう物思いをしているのかと人が尋ねるまでに表情に出てしまったと詠んだものである。天徳の歌合の歌である。歌の意味は明らかである。心を守ることは城郭のようだと言われているが、それゆえに随分我は忍んでいると思ったのに、人が不審に思うことによって、そこまで思い悩んでいることを心に嘆いて言ったのは、最も情趣深い。宗長聞書に、年月経る心を下に持たせたとある。思い悩む様子を人に咎められて驚くのである。
○季吟が言うには、「色に出にけり」ということで、それにしても色に出てしまったよと驚く体に聞こえるとある。

○壬生忠見
本名忠実
忠峯の息子という
天徳二年
摂津大目に任ぜられる
沙石集に言うには、
天徳の御歌合の時、兼盛と忠見を
左右に使わせた。
初恋という
題を給わって忠見が
秀歌を詠み出した
と言って、兼盛も
どうしてこれほどの歌を
詠めるだろうかと思った。
恋すという我が名は
早くも立ってしまった
─さて既に御前で
判定されたが、
兼盛の歌に
「包めども色に出で
にけり我が恋は」─
ともに秀歌である。
【同 中段】
この歌の心は、「恋すという」は「恋すれば」である。「まだき名の立つ」は早く名が立ったことよ。人はまさか知らないだろうと忍んでいたのに、思いもよらずその色にも見えてしまったということである。天徳の歌合に前の歌と続いた歌である。祇注に言うには、奥の歌は少し勝っていたということを言っている。まことに言葉遣いは比類ないものである。「まだき」は「早き」である。詠歌一体には前の歌をなお褒めている。この歌も心は前の歌と同じだとある。
○季吟が言うには、思い始めてからほどなく早くも名が立ったことだなあ。人に知られず思い始めたけれども、思いの深いゆえに早く現れた心が聞こえる。

The meaning of this poem is that though I think I must keep this secret from others and try to conceal it, I could not hide it completely, and it showed in my expression to the extent that people ask if I am troubled by something. This is a poem from the Tentoku poetry competition. The meaning of the poem is clear. It is said that guarding one's heart is like a fortress, so though I thought I was concealing it quite well, when people became suspicious, I lamented in my heart that my suffering was so apparent, which is most moving. According to Sōchō's notes, the feeling of years and months passing is held beneath. One is surprised when people reproach the appearance of being troubled.
○According to Kigin, with "iro ni ide ni keri" (it showed in my expression), it sounds like being surprised that "well, it did show in my expression after all."

According to the Shaseki-shū,
At the time of the Tentoku poetry competition, Kanemori and Tadami were
placed on the left and right sides.
Given the topic of
"first love," Tadami
composed an excellent poem,
and Kanemori also
wondered how he could
compose such a good poem.
"The reputation that I am in love
has already spread"
─Then, when judgment was made before the emperor,
Kanemori's poem was
"Though I try to conceal it, it shows
in my expression, my love"─
Both were excellent poems.

The meaning of this poem is that "koi su chō" means "because I love." "Madaki na no tatsu" means how quickly the reputation spread. Though I kept it secret thinking people would surely not know, unexpectedly it showed in my appearance. This is a poem that followed the previous one in the Tentoku poetry competition. According to Gi's commentary, the latter poem was said to be slightly superior. Truly the word usage is incomparable. "Madaki" means "early." In poetic criticism, the previous poem is still praised more. This poem's heart is said to be the same as the previous poem.
○According to Kigin, how quickly the reputation spread after I began to have feelings. Though I began to love in secret, because of the depth of my feelings, the heart that appeared early can be heard.
