のにあはしき風（ふう）にゆひ給ふべしさり
ながら御所方（ごしよがた）武家（ぶけ）方 町（まち）方の風（ふう）と
それ〳〵のわかちもあればとかく其処（そのところ）
のふうに随（したが）ふへし古風（こふう）なるがよしとて
むかしの髪（かみ）のゆひやうにもならず

髪は当世の結い方がいろいろあるといっても、皆遊女などが結い始めて
流行させるものなので、どれもその風俗は派手で
品がなく見苦しいものである。ただそれぞれ
の身分にふさわしい風俗に結うべきである。しかし
御所方、武家方、町方の風俗と
それぞれの区別もあるので、とにかくその場所
の風俗に従うべきである。古風なのが良いといって
昔の髪の結い方にするのも適当ではない。

若い女中は時代の風俗に従うのは良い
けれども、あまり目立たないように
結うべきである。年老いた人の癖として
自分が若かった時の風俗を言い出して
今の風俗を非難するものであるが、これは大きな
間違いである。あらゆることに時々移り変
わることは髪の風俗ばかりではない。小袖
の染色や模様、その他櫛や笄の形
まで十年二十年の内にはことごとく変わるものである。

styles first created by courtesans and such, becoming
fashionable, so their manner is gaudy,
vulgar, and unsightly. One should simply style the hair
in a manner appropriate to one's station. However,
since there are distinctions between court style, warrior house style, and townspeople's style,
one should follow the customs
of one's place. It is also inappropriate to
adopt ancient hairstyles simply because old-fashioned is considered good.

It is fine for young ladies-in-waiting to follow contemporary fashion,
but they should style their hair
so as not to be too conspicuous.
As is the habit of elderly people,
they speak of the fashions of their youth
and criticize current fashions, but this is a great
mistake. That all things change from time to time
is not limited to hair fashions. The dyed colors and patterns of kosode,
and even the shapes of combs and hairpins
all change completely within ten or twenty years.
