現代語訳
その時、粋な女の姿が見える。厚板の前帯、縞セイラス（セイラツ）のちりめんの小袖に、裏は黒繻子、間着は鶉革の向こう二つを重ねて、裾はたっぷりと。幽霊にしては裾があり過ぎる。いい年頃まで子がいないような顔つきだ。
「さてはうぶめか」と言えば、「お腹に溜まる利息さえ、やっと待たずに茶の内、流れ勘定、泡沫のような、哀れはかない借り着にて、見栄坊者のだらしなし、引きずり女の迷いの者で御座います。ついたけ主番は裾から下ばかり、間着二つ重ねの様でも、裾回しばかりで口は綿の人形仕立てどうを御目にかけたら、肝が潰れて目を回しなさろう。わきは三つ物の色揚げ、昼過ぎと申したいが夜の丑三つ頃、これが本当の着物の化けと言う。しばらく最なるほど、着物の化けとはよっぽど懇談した衣装付けも仇なり、野暮からぬ化け物だ。どんな面か見てやろう」
と言えば、おこそ頭巾を取る。頭は別嬪のばかしもの、顔はおばあ、おやっかな（おや、おっかないの訛り）。「とんだ化け物だ。なんと肝潰し、かえって女性へのねえ。」
「世の中、人間が化けを着なさるから、化け物は裸で逃げます。」
「それだから化け物より大晦日が怖いよ。」「なぜえ？」「はて、夜明かしだから化け物は出めえが、人の顔が長く短く、おっかなく見えるから、なんと。」
「大晦日というのを題にして、米、酒、肴、味噌、薪を集金にして化けて見せねえか。掛取りほど怖いものはねえぜ。」
「なんだい、だが化けてお目にかけやしょうが、わっちが怖かろうと言う故、なぜ」と言えば、「わっちゃあ女の掛取りさ」とやっきとして失せにける。
「しばらく、最なるほど女の掛取りは怖かろう」と、題を出したが何が出るかと庭を眺む。「なんどき（何時）か雪はしきりに積もりけり」と灯籠を見れば風あり、「夜の雪」と口ずさむ。
